Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Cable Needle

A Stitch Holder.

One 8 [B-9] inch Zip Fastener.

Tension

8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plainsmooth fabric.

Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B is shown thus[B-…].

Pattern

The Coat-Jumper

The Front

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 68 [B-76] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row eighteen times.

20th row: Work 2 sts in rib, (inc. once in next st, work 6 [B-7] sts in rib) nine times, P1, K1, inc. once in next st [B-K1]. (78 [B-86] sts).

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K39 [B-K43], slip remaining sts on to stitch holder.

** 2nd row: K2, P8, K2, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: Knit to last 10 sts, slip next 2 sts on to cable needle and hold at back of work, K2, knit sts from cable needle (working of these 4 sts will now be termed “Twist A” throughout), slip next 2 sts on to cable needle and hold at front of work, K2, knit sts from cable needle (working of these 4 sts will now be termed “Twist B” throughout), K2.

4th row: K2, P8, K2, purl to last st, K1.

5th row: Knit. **

Rep. from** to** eleven [B-twelve] times, then 2nd row once.

Keeping continuity of patt, cast off 3 [B-4] sts at beg. of next row, then dec. once at armhole edge in every alt. row until 32 [B-35] sts remain.

Work 25 rows in patt, without shaping.

Next row: K20 [B-K23], slip remaining 12 sts on to a length of wool and leave.

Continue on 20 [B-23] sts, dec. once at neck edge in every alt. row until 18 [B-20] sts remain.

Work 4 rows without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 9 [B-10] sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

Join in wool at centre front and work on remaining 39 [B-43] sts to correspond with Left Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle.

The Back

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 68 [B-76] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row eighteen times.

20th row: Work 6 [B-7] sts in rib, (inc. once in next st, work 13 [B-14] sts in rib), four times, inc. once in next st, work in rib to end of row. (73 [B-81] sts).

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twenty-four [B-twenty-six] times.

Cast off 3 [B-4 1 sts at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 59 [B-65] sts remain.

Continue without shaping, until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 9 [B-10] sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 18 [B-20] sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 36 [B-40] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row eighteen times.

20th row: Work 4 [B-6] sts in rib, (inc. once in next st, work 2 sts in rib) nine times, inc. once in next st, work in rib to end of row. (46 [B-50] sts).

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in stocking stitch, inc. once at each end of needle in 11th and following 10th row. (50 [B-54] sts).

Continue without shaping, until side edge measures 6 [B-8½] ins. from commencement.

Dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 24 [B-28] sts remain, then at each end of every row until 18 [B-20] sts remain.

Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

Neckband and Hood

Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder seams.

With right side of work facing, and using No. 12 Needles, work in patt across 12 sts from Right Front, knit up 51 [B-59] sts evenly round neck, work in patt across 12 sts from Left Front. (75 [B-83] sts).

1st row: Work in patt across 12 sts, * P1, K1, rep from * to last 13 sts, P1, work in patt to end of row.

2nd row: Work in patt across 12 sts, * K1, P1, rep from * to last 13 sts, K1, work in patt to end of row.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows three times.

For Coat without Hood, cast off.

9th row: Work in patt across 12 sts, (inc. once in next st) fourteen times, P23 [B-P31], (inc. once in next st), fourteen times, work in patt to end of row. (103 [B-111] sts)

Using No. 10 Needles.

10th row: Work 12 sts in patt, knit to last 12 sts, work 12 sts in patt Continue in stocking stitch and patt border, until work measures 6 ins. from top of ribbing at neck, finishing at end of a knit row.

Next row: Work 12 sts in patt, P39 [B-P43], P2tog, purl to last 12 sts, work 12 sts in patt

Divide sts equally on to two needles. Graft tog.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Stitch zip into front opening. Finally, press all seams.

The Breechettes

The Right Leg

Using No. 10 Needles, cast on 72 [B-80] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row three times.

5th row: K2, yo, K2tog, * work 2 sts in rib, yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row eleven times. **

Shape for back as follows:

1st row: K6, turn.

2nd and alt. rows: Purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K12, turn.

5th row: K18, turn.

Continue in this manner, until row “K30, turn” has been worked.

Next row: Purl.

Proceed as follows:

*** 1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, P29 [B-P33], K2, P8, K2, P29 [B-P33], K1.

3rd row: K32 [B-K36], “Twist A,” “Twist B,” K32 [B-K36].

4th row: K1, P29 [B-P33], K2, P8, K2, P29, [B-P33], K1.

Continue in stocking stitch and centre panel, inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row until there are 90 [B-98] sts on needle.

Continue without shaping, until work measures 8 [B-9] ins. from commencement (measured at short side).

Dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 52 [B-60] sts remain, then at each end of every following 4th row until 46 [B-50] sts remain.

Continue without shaping until work measures 6½ [B-7] ins. from crutch (measured at centre of work), ending with a 4th row of patt

Size A. Next row: K1, (K1, yo, K2tog) six times, K8, (K1, yo, K2tog) six times, K1.

Size B. Next row: (K1, yo, K2tog) seven times, K8, (K1, yo, K2tog) seven times.

In following row: K1, P16 [B-P18], K2, P8, K2, P16 [B-P18], K1.

Divide for foot as follows:

1st row: K19 [B-K21], work 8 sts in patt, K3, turn.

2nd row: K3, P8, K3, turn.

Keeping cable panel correct on centre 12 sts, and knitting st at each end of needle in every row, continue on these 14 sts for 2½ [B-2¾] ins., finishing at end of a 4th row of patt. Break off wool.

With right side of work facing, and using right-hand needle, knit up 10 [B-12] sts along side of foot, knit across 14 sts at top of foot, knit up 10 [B-12] sts along other side of foot, finally knit remaining 16 [B-18] sts (66 [B-74] sts).

Work 10 rows in Garter Stitch without shaping.

Shape for foot as follows:

1st row: K1, K2tog, K24 [B-K28], K2tog, K8, K2tog, K24 [B-K28], K2tog, K1.

2nd and alt. rows: Knit.

3rd row: K1, K2tog, K22 [B-K26], K2tog, K8, K2tog, K22 [B-K26], K2tog, K1.

5th row: K1, K2tog, K20 [B-K24], K2tog, K8, K2tog, K20 [B-K24], K2tog, K1. Cast off.

The Left Leg

Work exactly as given for Right Leg to **

Next row: Knit.

Shape for back as follows:

1st row: K1, P5, turn.

2nd and alt. rows: Knit.

3rd row: K1, P11, turn.

5th row: K1, P17, turn.

Continue in this manner until row “K1, P29, turn” has been worked.

Complete to match Right Leg from *** to end.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up back, front, leg and foot seams. Press all seams.

Make 3 cords, and thread through holes at waist and ankles.

Attach a small tassel to ends of each cord.
