Child’s Mittens

Version 1

Brioche knit baby mittens
This sample mitten was knit with generic fingering weight sock yarn on the needles stated in the pattern.

Materials, Gauge and Size

1 pair of 3mm (US size 2 or 3) straight needles
1 pair of 2mm (US size 0) straight needles
Fine fingering or fine sock weight (Aus 3 ply weight) wool

Knit with a generic fingering weight sock yarn on the needles stated in the pattern, this mitten measures  2¾ inches/7cm wide and 2½ inches/6.3cm high.

To change the size, use a finer yarn or cast on a different number of stitches, making sure they can be evenly divided by 3.

Abbreviations

yo = yarn over
k = knit
k2tog = knit two stitches together

Pattern

Using 3mm (US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 57sts
Rows 1-36: *Yo, slip 1 as if to purl, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row

Change to 2mm (US size 0) needles

Row 37: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row
Row 38: K2, *Yo, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row
Row 39: Knit
Cast off.

Fold in half lengthwise and sew together across the top and down the sides.
Thread fine ribbon through the row of eyelets.

Version 2

The original instructions for these mittens were quite poor so this is another version that may have been what was intended. It’s the same as the version above, but with a nice little cuff at the bottom.

Fine fingering or fine sock weight (Aus 3 ply weight) wool

Knit with a generic fingering weight sock yarn on the needles stated in the pattern, this mitten measures  2¾ inches/7cm wide and 2½ inches/6.3cm high measured from the wrist.

To change the size, use a finer yarn or cast on a different number of stitches, making sure they can be evenly divided by 3.

Change back to 3mm needles

Row 40:*Yo, slip 1 as if to purl, k1; repeat from * to the end of the row (57sts)

Now work 36 more rows brioche as follows: *Yo, slip 1 as if to purl, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row

Fold in half lengthwise and sew together across the top and down the sides.

Thread fine ribbon through the row of eyelets.
