Winning tips gloves

This vintage knitting pattern for “Winning Tips” lady’s gloves was first published in the early 1940’s. The design features a textured stitch throughout and coloured bands at the cuffs and fingertips. They are sized to fit adult women and are knit flat on 2 needles.

Note: This pattern uses old UK needle sizes and is knit with fingering weight wool.

Materials

1-1/2 ozs. of 4-ply Worsted Fingering Wool in main shade—Lemon, and 1/4 oz. each of the same wool in Camilia* Red and Lacquer Green. 1 pair No. 13 knitting needles.

Measurements

To fit size 6-1/4 to 6-3/4 hand.

Pattern

R. H. Glove

Using red wool, cast on 46 sts. Do NOT knit into back of cast on sts.

1st row: K.

2nd row: K.

3rd row: P. Then rep. the 2nd and 3rd rows 3 more times, thus ending with a p. row.

10th row: P. Break off red, join in green.

11th row: K.

12th row: K.

13th row: P.

Rep. the last 2 rows twice more.

18th row: P. Break off green, join in lemon.

Next row (r.s.f.): K., inc. into every 6th st. (53 sts.).

Work 7 rows in moss st. Now commence thumb gusset as follows:

1st row (r.s.f.) Moss st. 28, p. 3, moss st. 22.

2nd row: Moss st. 22, k. 3, moss st. 28.

3rd row: Moss st. 28, p. 1 (k. 1, p. 1, k. 1) all into next st., p. 1, moss st. to end.

4th row: Moss st. 22, k. 1, moss st. 3, k. 1, moss st. 28.

5th row: Moss st. 28, p. 1, moss st. 3, p. 1, moss st. 22.

6th row: as 4th row.

7th row: Moss st. 28, p. 1, inc. in next st. (taking care to keep moss st. correct), moss st. 1, inc. into next st., p. 1, moss st. 22.

8th row: Moss st. 22, k. 1, moss st. 5, k1, moss st. 28. Note: K1 was missing from the original instructions.

Rep. these last 4 rows 4 more times, allowing for 2 extra sts. in the thumb gusset after each inc. row. There will now be 13 sts. between the p. sts. in the thumb gusset and 65 sts. altogether on needle. Work 3 more rows after the last increase row.

The Thumb

(r.s.f.): Work across 43 sts., turn and work back across 15 sts. Turn and cast on 3 sts. Now cont. in moss st. on these 18 sts. until the thumb measures 1/2 inch less than finished length (approx. 1 1/2 ins.), ending with a wrong side row.

Break off lemon wool, join in green. Now work thumb end as follows and this applies to all finger tops, too:

1st row: K. in green.

2nd row: K.

3rd row: P. but working tog. every 2nd and 3rd sts.

4th row: K.

5th row: Break off green, join in red and k. the row.

6th row: K.

7th row: P., working tog. every 2nd and 3rd sts.

8th row: K. Bread wool, thread through rem. sts. and fasten off. Sew down seam of thumb. Rejoin lemon wool and with r.s.f pick up and k. 3 sts. from base of thumb and moss st. to end (53 sts.). Cont. across all sts. in moss st. for 1 1/4 ins., ending with a wrong side row.

First Finger

(r.s.f.): Moss st. across 34 sts., then turn and work back across 15 sts. Turn and cast on 3 sts. Cont. in moss st. on these 18 sts. until work measures 1/2 in. less than finished finger length (approximately 2 to 2 1/14 ins.), ending with a wrong side row. Break off lemon, join in green and work finger top as for thumb. Thread wool through rem. sts. and fasten off. Join seam to base of finger.

Second Finger

Rejoin lemon wool and pick up and k. 3 sts. from base of 1st finger, moss st. 7, then turn and work back over 17 sts. Turn and cast on 3 sts., then cont. in moss st. on these 20 sts. until work measures 1/2 in. less than required finished length (approximately 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 ins.), ending with a wrong side row. Break off lemon, join in green and cont. working finger top as for thumb. Sew down seam.

Third Finger

Rejoin lemon wool and pick up and k. 3 sts. from base of 2nd finger, moss st. 6, turn and work 15 sts. back. Turn and cast on 3 sts. and cont. in moss st. on these 18 sts. until work measures 1/2 in. less than required finished length (approx. 2 to 2 1/4 ins.). Work top as for other fingers and sew down seam.

Fourth Finger

Rejoin lemon wool and pick up and k. 3 sts. from base of 3rd finger, moss st. to end. Cont. in moss st. on these 15 sts. until work measures 1/2 in. less than required finished length (approximately 1 1/2 ins.). Work top as for other fingers, then sew down seam of glove to wrist edge.

L.H. Glove

Work as for R.H. to commencement of thumb gusset. Now work as follows:

1st row (r.s.f) Moss st. 22, p. 3, moss st. 28.

2nd row: Moss st. 28, k. 3, moss st. 22.

3rd row: Moss st. 22, p. 1 (k. 1, p. 1, k. 1), all into next st., p. 1, moss st. 28.

4th row: Moss st. 28, k. 1, moss st. 3, k. 1, moss st. 22.

5th row: Moss st. 22, p. 1, moss st. 3, p.1, moss st. 28.

6th row: As 4th row.

7th row: Moss st. 22, p. 1, inc. into next st., moss st. 1, inc. into next st., p. 1, moss st. 28.

8th row: Moss st. 28, k. 1, moss st. 5, k. 1, moss st. 22.

Cont. inc. at each side of thumb gusset in every 4th row until the same number of rows have been worked as for R.H. thumb (65 sts.). Don’t forget the extra 3 rows after you are done with the thumb gusset increase.

The Thumb

Work across 37 sts., then turn and cast on 3 sts. Work back over 18 sts., turn and cont. on these 18 sts. for thumb. Rejoin wool and pick up 3 sts. from base of thumb, work to end. Cont. until work measures same as for R.H., ending with a wrong side row.

First Finger

Work across 34 sts., turn and cast on 3 sts. Work back over 18 sts., turn and cont. on these 18 sts. for finger.

Second Finger

Pick up 3 from base of 1st finger, moss st. 7, turn and cast on 3 sts. Work back over 20 sts. and turn. Cont. on these 20 sts. for finger.

Third Finger

Pick up 3 from base of 2nd finger, moss st. 6, then turn and cast on 3 sts. Work back over 18 sts. and turn. Cont. on these 18 sts. for finger.

Fourth Finger

Pick up 3 sts. from base of 3rd finger and cont. on these 15 sts. Sew down seam to wrist edge. Press gloves lightly, omitting the rolls at the wrists and finger tips.

sic. — the text clearly reads Camilia, and while the flower is Camilla, the odd spelling may be what the wool company used for the dye name.
