Shell for counterpane from Home Work, published 1891

This pattern calls for size 12 knitting cotton, which corresponds to today’s fingering weight, plus needles to match (3-3.25mm).

Pattern

Cast on 44 stitches.

Note: The size and weight of the bedspread maybe changed by altering the thickness of the yarn used and appropriate needles for your choice of yarn.

1st, 3rd and 5th rows: Knit

2nd Row: (K2tog, yo) 21 times, k2tog

4th Row: (K2tog, yo) 21 times, k1

6th Row: Slip 1, k2, k2tog, k to the end of the row

7th Row: Slip 1, k2, k2tog, p to last 4 sts, k4

8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 20th, 21st, 23rd, 24th, 26th, 27th, 29th, 30th, 32nd, 33rd, 35th,
36th, 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st and 43rd rows are all knit like the 6th row.

The 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd, 25th, 28th, 31st, 34th, and 37th rows are all knit like the 7th row.

42nd Row: Slip 1, k2, k2tog, k2

44th Row: Slip 1, k1, k2tog, k1

45th Row: Slip 1, k2tog, k1

46th Row: Slip 1, k2tog, slip the 1st st over the last and draw the thread through.

In joining these shells, place each narrowed point to the centre of the first row of another shell, and allow all the points to run downward, then one can easily see where the other shells join in, and sew together.
