Mrs Lovett’s Mitts

Mrs Lovett's Mitts by Caroline Morrow

by Caroline Morrow

Inspired by Sweeney Todd, these mitts are knit top down, flat, and then seamed at the side, leaving a hole for the thumb.

Size

Fits most. My hand is about 7 inches around the palm just below my fingers. Size can be adjusted by casting on extra stitches, making sure the total is an even number.

Yarn

Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread, Size 10. Black.

Gauge

About 7.27 sts. to the inch in pattern. As the mitts are stretchy, the gauge need not be exact. I used size 2 needles.

Pattern

Fishnet Lace

Row 1: k1, [k2tog, yo] until last stitch, k1
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: k1, [yo, k2tog] until last stitch, k1
Row 4: Purl

Mitts (make 2):

Cast on 42 sts. Do not join.

Top band:
Knit 6 rows of garter stitch.

Main section:
Knit 4 repeats of fishnet pattern (16 rows).

First Decrease for palm:
k1, k2tog, k2tog, [k2tog, yo] until last five stitches, ssk, ssk, k1
Complete rows 2-4 of the fishnet pattern.

Knit rows 1-4 of the fishnet pattern once more.

Second Decrease:
k1, k2tog, k2tog, [k2tog, yo] until last five stitches, ssk, ssk, k1
Complete rows 2-4 of the fishnet pattern.

Knit pattern 7 more times (28 rows)

Lower band:
Knit 10 rows of garter stitch.
Bind off LOOSELY.

Finishing

Using mattress stitch, sew up from the top edge (the narrower garter stitch band) until the first decrease (about an inch). Next, sew up from the bottom edge for about two inches or so or until there is the right amount of space for the thumb.

Weave in ends and trim.

Wear with flair as you make your pies!
