Top: Version 1, British Moss Stitch
Bottom: Version 2, American Moss Stitch
With the international availabilty of knitting patterns the names of certain stitches can sometimes get very confusing. I’ve been asked several times the difference between Irish and American Moss st and here is what I have found: The top stitch in the graphic, also known as Seed St, is the stitch my English mother and grandmother
always used to call Moss Stitch. The bottom st is the Moss St that I notice most American patterns use.
Here is how to do them…
Abbreviations
P = Purl
K = Knit
Method
Version 1
Cast on an even number of sts.
Row 1: (K1, P1) rep to end
Row 2: (P1, K1) rep to end
Repeat these 2 rows for length desired. Cast off in moss st.
Version 2
Cast on an even number of sts.
Rows 1 and 2: (K1, P1) rep to end
Rows 3 and 4: (P1, K1) rep to end
Repeat these 2 rows for length desired. Cast off in moss st.
