According to her posthumously-published book The Opinionated Knitter, the magazine's editors altered Zimmermann's circular knitting instructions after she submitted the sweater, rendering them in the back-and-forth "flat" knitting method that was more popular among American knitters at the time.

I think whoever wrote this is confusing it with the Fair Isle yoke sweater, which was rewritten by the pattern company she sold the design to. The Aran pattern came from British Vogue, IIRC, EZ just knit the sample.--Alexandra 21:27, 19 August 2007 (PDT)
