Bon Voyage Gloves (Vintage)

This vintage knitting pattern for "Bon Voyage" lady's gloves was published in the early 1940's. These gloves feature an elegant cable pattern on the cuffs, are knit flat on 2 needles and are sized to fit adult women.

Note: This pattern uses old UK needle sizes and is knit with fingering weight wool.

Knitted on Two Needles (See Front Cover)

MATERIALS: 2 ozs. of 4-ply Worsted Fingering Wool. 1 pair No. 13 knitting needles. 2 small double-pointed needles for working the cables.

MEASUREMENTS: To fit 6-1/2 to 7.

TENSION: Over the stocking stitch fabric: 9 sts. and 12 rows to 1 inch.

ABBREVIATIONS: See below.

R. H. GLOVE: Cast on 61 sts. and work as follows:--

1st row: P. 2, * k. 2, p. 3; rep. from * ending the row with p. 2.

2nd row: K. 2, * p. 2, k. 3; rep. from * ending the row with k. 2.

Rep. these 2 rows for 2 ins., ending with a 2nd row. Now work a cable row thus:--

CABLE ROW: P. 2, * sl. next 2 sts. on to a double-pointed needle and leave in front of work, place next 3 sts. on the other double-pointed needle and also leave in front of work, k. 2, p. the 3 sts. from the spare needle, then k. the 2 sts. from the other spare needle (cable made) p. 3; rep. from * ending the row with p. 2.

Now work 7 rows in the same rib as before (the next row will be a 2nd row).

Work another cable row as before.

Next row: P. 5, * p. 2 tog., p. 8; rep. from * until 6 sts. rem., p. 2 tog., p. 2, p. 2 tog. (54 sts.). Work 4 rows in st.st., 1st row k.

COMMENCE THUMB GUSSET:

NOTE: The glove is now worked entirely in st.st.

1st row: K. 29, inc. into each of next 2 sts., k. 23.

Work 3 rows in st.st.

5th row: K. 29, inc., k. 2, inc., k. 23.

Cont. rep. the last 4 rows (making increases at both sides of Thumb Gusset in every 4th row and allowing for the 2 extra sts. after each repeat), until there are 14 extra sts. on needle (7 inc. have been made at each side). Work 1 more row after the last inc. row (3 rows if a longer hand is required.)

THUMB: (r.s.f.): K. 45, turn and cast on 2 sts.

Next row: P. 18, turn and cast on 2 sts. Cont. on these 20 sts. for 2 ins. (or required length).

SHAPE TOP:

NOTE: This method is used for shaping tops of all fingers.

1st row: (r.s.f.): K. tog. every 2nd and 3rd st.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: K. 2 tog. all along row. Break wool, thread through rem. sts. and sew down seam of thumb.

Rejoin wool with r.s.f. and pick up and k. 4 sts. from base of thumb, k. to end (56 sts.). Cont. across all sts. for 1-1/2 ins., ending with a p. row.

FIRST FINGER: K. 36, turn and cast on 1 st. Next row: P. 17, turn and cast on 2 sts. (19 sts.). Cont. on these 19 sts. for 2-3/4 ins. (or length required). Shape top and sew down seam.

SECOND FINGER (r.s.f.): Rejoin wool and pick up 3 sts. from base of 1st finger, k. 7, turn and cast on 1 st. Next row: P. 18, turn and cast on 2 sts. (20 sts.). Cont. on these 20 sts. for 3 ins. (or length required). Shape top and sew down seam.

THIRD FINGER (r.s.f.): Rejoin wool, pick up and k. 3 sts. from base of 2nd finger, k. 6, turn; and cast on 1 st. Next row: P. 16, turn and cast on 2 sts. (18 sts.). Cont. on these 18 sts. for 2-1/2 ins. (or length required). Shape top and sew down seam.

FOURTH FINGER (r.s.f.): Rejoin wool and pick up 2 sts. from base of 3rd finger, k. to end. Cont. on these 16 sts. for 2 ins. (or length required). Shape top and sew down seam of glove.

L. H. GLOVE: Work as for R. H. to the commencement of thumb gusset.

THUMB GUSSET: 1st row: K. 22, inc. into next 2 sts., k. 30.

Cont. making increases every 4th row as on R. H. until 7 increase have been made at each side and the same number of rows worked to commencement of thumb.

THE THUMB (r.s.f.): K. 39, turn and cast on 2 sts. Next row: p. 18, turn and cast on 2 sts. Work thumb on these 20 sts. and complete glove as for R. H., but casting on the 2 sts. for fingers at the side nearest back of hand and the 1st. at the side nearest the palm. Press gloves carefully, omitting the ribbing and cable st.
