Fancy Mittens

The lace pattern that reaches up the back of the Fancy Mittens from Home Work

Please note: aside from the lace sample shown above, this pattern has not been test knit

Pattern

Size, Materials and Gauge

These mittens are designed to fit a small woman’s hand.
Knit with the suggested number of cast on sts at a gauge of 9 sts per inch, these mitts will fit a hand 17cm or 6 3/4″ in circumference with 1/4″ of ease.

You will need a fine fingering weight yarn and 2.25mm needles. Don’t forget to check your gauge.

Cuff

The cuff is worked the same way for both mittens.

Cast on 63sts and work as follows until your work is as long as you desire for the cuff of your mitten

R1 (RS): k1, yo, k3, yo, k1, p2; repeat to the end of the round

R2: k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, p2; repeat to the end of the round

R3: ssk, k5, k2tog, p2; repeat to the end of the round

R4: ssk, k3, k2tog, p2; repeat to the end of the round

Continue working in this manner, knitting two more stitches between the “m1” of the thumb gusset on every second round until you reach M1, k27, M1

Note that the lace stitch that runs up the back of the mitten has a four round repeat so you can keep following the instructions in square brackets for the lace section.

Continue working in this manner, knitting two more stitches between the “m1” of the thumb gusset until you reach M1, k27, M1

Note that the lace stitch that runs up the back of the mitten has a four round repeat so you can keep following the instructions in square brackets for the lace section.

For both mittens

Place 31sts on a holder for the thumb. These stitches include the 27sts between the “M1” stitches knit on the last round, both “M1” stitches (29sts) and one plain knit stitch on either side of the M1 stitches (31sts).

Keeping lace pattern correct throughout, work 30sts, cast on 2, work to the end of the round.
Work in pattern, for 3 ½”, making sure to finish with round 4 or 8 of the lace pattern.

Thumb

Put the stitches for the thumb onto three double pointed needles

Knit 31, pick up 2sts from the two stitches cast on for the body (33sts)

Next round: k30, k2tog, ssk, (the second stitch of the ssk will use one stitch from the first needle)- 31sts

Knit 30 rounds straight

Decrease for top of thumb
*K2tog, k2; repeat to last 3sts, k2tog, k1 (24sts)

Knit one round

*K2tog, k2; repeat to end of round (17sts)

Knit one round

K2tog to last st, k1 (9sts)

Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten off.

I am including a scan of the original pattern so that you can appreciate the difference between the original and updated patterns. Note that the original does not have a thumb gusset mentioned, although it would not work without one.
