Versatile Beret (Vintage)

Versatile beret

This pattern uses old UK needle sizes and fingering weight yarn.

Wear it as shown in the picture, on the level, tilted forward — just as it pleases you! Finish with ribbon.

Materials

2 oz. Paton’s super-Scotch fingering, 4-ply;
1 pair No. 8 knitting needles;
1 yard corded ribbon, 1 inch wide.

Measurements

Width all round headband, 22 ins.

Tension

To get this measurement, it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 6 1/2 stitches to the inch.

Note: Even though the original pattern suggests using 4mm needles to knit this pattern, the gauge and use of fingering weight yarn suggests that you should really use 3.75mm needles

Pattern

Using No. 8 needles (US 6; 4mm), cast on 110 sts. and work one inch in rib of K1, P1. Proceed as follows:

1st Row: * K10, increase once in next st., repeat from * to end of row.

2nd and alt. rows: Knit plain.

3rd Row: * K11, increase once in next st., repeat from * to end of row.

5th Row: *K12, increase once in next st., repeat from * to end of row.

7th Row: * K13, increase once in next st., repeat from * to end of row.

Continue increasing in this manner in every alternate row until there are 20 sts. between each increase, and 220 sts. on needle.

Work 5 rows in garter-stitch (i.e., every row plain). Proceed as follows:

1st Row: * K20, K2tog., repeat from * to end of row.

2nd and alt. rows: Knit plain.

3rd Row: *K19, K2tog., repeat from * to end of row.

5th Row: *K18, K2tog., repeat from * to end of row.

Continue decreasing in this manner in every alt. row until there is 1 st. between each decreasing.

In next row: *K2tog., repeat from * to end of row. Run thread through these sts., draw up and fasten securely.
