Tatiana Top

This vintage knitting pattern from the 1940’s features a striking top, knit sideways in the feather and fan, or “old shale” pattern. The added peplum may be replaced with a band of simple k1, p1 rib for a totally updated look

This knitting pattern uses fingering weight wool and old UK knitting needle sizes

Materials

Lincoln Mills Daphne Crochet
– Black – 3 oz.
– Turquoise – 295 – 4 oz.
1 pair No. 10 needles (modern US #3, UK 3.25mm)
1 crochet hook
4 small buttons
3 snap fasteners

Measurements

Length: 21″
Width around bust: 34″
Sleeve seam: 1 1/4″

Tension

7-1/2 sts. to 1 inch.
10 rows to 1 inch.

Pattern

(Upper portion of this garment worked lengthwise)

Right Half of Back

Cast on 12 sts. with black wool and knit into back of sts.

Cast on 6 sts. at beginning of next row and knit remainder of row.

Now work in stocking st., casting on 6 sts. at beginning of alternate rows, until there are 48 sts. on needle.

Purl next row.

Cast on 12 sts. at beginning of next row and knit (60 sts. on needle).

Cast on 50 sts. at beginning of next row, knit into back of all cast-on sts. and purl remainder of row. Knit 1 row.

Fasten off black wool and join turquoise (110 sts. on needle).

Work in following pattern:
Rows 1 to 6 — Knit.

Row 7—* (K. 2 tog.) twice, (w.o., K.1) 3 times, w.o. (K. 2 tog.) twice, repeat from * across row.

Row 8—K. 1, P. to last st., K. 1.

Rows 9 and 10—Knit.

Row 11—Repeat Row 7.

Row 12—Repeat Row 8.

Rows 13 to 18—Knit.

‘** Fasten off turquoise and join black. Knit 2 rows.

Purl 1 row.

Knit 1 row.

Next row—Purl 84 sts., turn. Knit to armhole end. Purl back, working across entire row.

Work 3 more rows in stocking st.

Join turquoise and work Rows 1 to 18 of pattern.

Repeat from ** once. Cast off.

Left Half of Back

Cast on 12 sts. with black wool and knit into back of sts.

Cast on 6 sts. at beginning of next row and purl remainder of row.

Now work in stocking st. casting on 6 st. at beginning os purl rows, until there are 48 sts. on needle.

Knit 1 row.

Cast on 12 sts. at beginning of next row and purl remainder of row (60 sts. on needle).

Cast on 50 sts. at beginning of next row, knit into back of all cast-on sts. and knit remainder of row.

Purl 1 row.

Knit 1 row. (110 sts. on needle.)

Fasten off black and join turquoise and work the 18 pattern rows in same manner as right half.

‘** Fasten off turquoise and join black. Knit 2 rows.

Purl 1 row.

Next row—Knit 84 sts., turn. Purl up to armhole end.

Knit back, working across entire row.

Work 4 more rows in stocking st.

Join turquoise and work Rows 1 to 18 of pattern.

Repeat from ** once. Cast off.

Left Half of Front

Work in same manner as right half of back until second turquoise stripe has been completed. Commence shaping neck as follows: Fasten off turquoise and tie on black. Knit 2 rows.

Cast off 15 sts. at beginning of next row and purl remainder of row.

Knit 1 row.

Cast off 2 sts., purl 67 sts., turn. Knit back to neck end.

Cast off 2 sts. and purl remainder of row, working across entire row.

Knit 1 row.

Cast off 2 sts. and purl remainder of row.

Knit 1 row.

Tie on turquoise and knit 6 rows, casting off 2 sts. at neck edge of alternate rows. Cast off. Note: this “cast off
may be an error in the original pattern since the pattern continues

Cast off 6 sts. at beginning of next row and work Row 7 across remainder of row. (77 sts. on needle.) Now work rows 8 to 18 inclusive, of pattern. Cast off.

Right Half of Front

Work in same manner as left half of back until second turquoise stripe has been completed. Commence shaping neck as follows: Tie on black. Knit 1 row.

Cast off 15 sts. at beginning of next row and knit remainder of row.

Purl 1 row.

Cast off 2 sts. at beginning of next row, knit 67 sts., turn. Purl back to neck edge.

Cast off 2 sts. and knit remainder of row, working across entire row.

Work 4 more rows in stocking st., casting off 2 sts. at beginning of knit rows.

Tie on turquoise and knit 6 rows, casting off 2 st. at beginning of alternate rows at neck edge, twice, then 6 sts. once. (77 sts. on needle).

Work Rows 7 to 18 of pattern. Cast off.

Peplum

(Back and Front alike). Cast on 176 sts. with turquoise wool and work Rows 1 to 18 of pattern.

Tie on black and knit 2 rows.

Now work in stocking st. until peplum measures 4 inches from start.

Next knit row, work as follows: K. 8, * K. 2 tog., repeat from * to last 8 sts., K. * (96 sts. on needle).

Work 8 more rows in stocking st. Cast off.

Work another piece in the same manner.

Sleeves

Cast on 101 sts. with turquoise wool and work Rows 1 to 18 of pattern, with the exception that Rows 7 and 11 will commence and end with K.1.

Change to black wool after working Row 18 and knit 2 rows.

Work 10 rows in stocking st. Cast off.

Finishing

Join the 2 halves of front, oversewing invisibly on wrong side.

Join the 2 halves of back to within 4 inches of neck edge.

Join shoulders.

Sew in sleeves, oversewing carefully on wrong side so that seam is almost invisible.

Join underarm seams, leaving about 2 inches open on left side.

Sew peplum to lower edge, leaving about 1 inch open on left side.

Work 1 row of d.c. (US single crochet) around neck edge, working turquoise on turquoise, black on black.

Work a row of d.c. in turquoise down right side of back opening, making loops for buttons 1 inch apart.

Work a row of d.c. up left side of back opening.

Work a row of d.c. around placket and sew on snap fasteners. Sew in shoulder pads.
