The Red Scarf Project was started in 2006 as an effort by the Orphan Foundation of America to provide Valentine's Day gifts of hand-made red scarves to college-bound teenagers in foster care. Endorsed by Interweave Knits they solicited scarves from all over the world. In 2007, with patterns donated by famous knit designers, and endorsements from popular knitting blogs and regional knitting guilds, they received over 15,000 donated scarves.
