Eight stitches to a pattern. Pins No. 10.

First row:—Knit 5, bring the wool forward, knit 1, wool forward, and repeat.

Seam second row.

Third row:—Knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 together, wool forward, knit 3, wool forward, and repeat.

Seam fourth row.

Fifth row:—Knit 3 together, wool forward, knit 5, wool forward, and repeat.

Seam sixth row.

Seventh row:—Wool forward, knit 2,* wool forward, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 together, wool forward, knit 3, and repeat from *.

Seam eighth row.

Ninth row:—Wool forward, knit 4,* wool forward, knit 3 together, wool forward, knit 5, and repeat from *.—Begin again from third row.

Using 3.25mm/US3 needles and sport weight yarn, CO 12 sts.

Set-up rows:
Row 1 (RS): *k5, yo, k1, yo, repeat from * (16 sts)
Row 2 (WS): k1, p15

Pattern rows:
Row 3: *ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, repeat from *
Row 4: k1, p15
Row 5: *cdd, yo, k5, yo, repeat from *
Row 6: k1, p15
Row 7: yo, k2, *yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo*, k3, repeat between *s, k1 (17 sts)
Row 8: p across
Row 9: yo, k4, *yo, cdd, yo*, k5, repeat between *s, k2 (18 sts)
Row 10: p across

Repeat rows 3 - 10 until work is desired size. BO knitwise.

This version includes 2 edge sts, worked in garter st, on either side of the work. The edge sts are included in the row instructions.

Using 3.25mm/US3 needles and sport weight yarn, CO multiple of 8 sts plus 4.

Pattern (16 rows):
Row 1 (RS): k2, *k2, yo, cdd, yo, k3, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2
Row 2 and all following WS rows: k2, p to last 2 sts, k2
Row 3: k2, *k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk, k1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2
Row 5: k3, *yo, k5, yo, cdd, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 7: k2, *k2, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2
Row 9: k2, *k3, yo, cdd, yo, k2, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2
Row 11: k2, *k1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2
Row 13: k1, * cdd, yo, k5, yo, repeat from * to last 3 sts, k3
Row 15: k2, *k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k2, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2

Repeat pattern until work is desired size, ending with row 16. BO knitwise.

[edit] Abbreviations

  • BO = bind off
  • cdd (centered double decrease) = slip 2 as if to knit them together, knit 1, pass the two slipped stitches over.
  • CO = cast on
  • k = knit
  • k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
  • p = purl
  • RS = right side
  • ssk = slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 purlwise, knit these 2 stitches together
  • st / sts = stitch / stitches
  • WS = wrong side
  • yo = yarn over
