Little folk gloves for toddlers

“Little Folk” gloves are a vintage pattern from the 1940’s featuring a geometric embossed design on the back of each glove. These gloves are sized to fit children from ages 2 – 4 years and are knit flat on 2 needles.

This pattern uses old UK needle sizes and fingering weight yarn.

Materials

1 oz. of 3-ply Hand Knitting Wool, 1 pair No. 14 for (size 2-3 years) or No. 13 for (size 3-4 years) knitting needles.

Measurements

To fit size 2-4 years.

Tension

9-1/2 sts. to 1 in. on No. 13 needles.

R. H. GLOVE

Cast on 40 sts. and work 1-1/2 ins. in k. 2, p. 2 rib, beg. the 1st row with k. 2. Inc. into the 5th and 15th sts. on the last row (42 sts.). Now work as follows:

1st row: P. 22, k. 20.

2nd row: P. 20, k. 22.

3rd row: (K. 2, p. 2) 5 times, k. 2 (22 sts. to patt.), then k. to end.

4th row: P. 20 (p. 2, k. 2) 5 times, p. 2 (22 sts. to patt.).

These 4 rows comprise the patt., and are repeated throughout for back of hand while the palm, thumb and fingers are worked in st.st.

Commence the thumb gusset: 1st row: Pat. 22, k. 1, k. 3 times into next st., k. to end.

2nd row: P. 22, patt. 22.

3rd row: Patt. 22, k. 1, k. twice into next st., k. 1, k. twice into next st., k. to end.

4th row: P. 24, patt. 22.

5th row: Patt. 22, k. 24.

6th row: P. 24, patt. 22.

7th row: Patt. 22, k. 1, inc. into next st., k. 3, inc. into next st., k. to end.

Cont. rep. these last 4 rows (allowing for 2 extra sts. in thumb gusset after each rep.) until there are 10 extra sts. on needle (52 sts.). After the last inc. row work 1 more row without increasing.

The thumb: Patt. 22, k. 13, turn and cast on 1 st. Next row: P. back across 13 sts., turn and cast on 1 st. Cont. in st.st. on these 14 sts. for 1-1/4 ins. (or to 1/4 in. from tip), ending with a p. row.

Shape top: This shaping applies to the tops of all fingers.

1st row: K. tog. every 2nd and 3rd st.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: K. 2 tog. all along row. Break wool, thread through rem. sts. and sew down seam to base.

Rejoin wool with r.s.f. and pick up and k. 2 sts. from base of thumb, work to end of row (42 sts.) Keeping patt. correct for back of hand, work 11 rows across all sts.

First finger: K. across 27 sts., then turn and cast on 1 st. Next row: P. 13 back, turn and cast on 1 st. Cont. in st.st. on these 14 sts. for 1-1/2 ins. (or to 1/4 inch, from tip). Shape top and sew down seam to base.

Second finger: Rejoin wool and pick up and k. 2 sts. from base of 1st finger, k. 5, turn and cast on 1 st. Next row: P. 13 back, then turn and cast on 1 st. Cont. in st.st. on these 14 sts. for 1-7/8 ins. (or to 1/4 in. from tip). Shape top and sew down seam to base.

Third finger: Rejoin wool and pick up and k. 2 sts. from base of 2nd finger, k. 5, turn and cast on 1 st. Next row: P. 13 back, turn and cast on 1 st. Cont. in st.st. on these 14 sts. for 1-1/2 ins. (or to 1/4 in. from tip). Shape top and sew down seam to base.

Fourth finger: Rejoin wool and pick up and k. 2 sts. from base of 3rd finger, k. to end. Cont. on these 12 sts. in st.st. for 1-1/4 ins. (or to 1/4 in. from tip). Shape top and sew down seam of glove to wrist edge.

L. H. GLOVE

Cast on 40 sts. and work in rib for 1-1/2 ins., but this time beg. the row with P. 2 instead of k. 2. On last row inc. into the 25th and 35th sts. to make 42 sts. on needle.

1st row: K. 20, p. 22.

2nd row: K. 22, p. 20.

3rd row: K. 20 (k. 2, p. 2) 5 times, k. 2.

4th row: (P. 2, k. 2) 5 times, p. 2, p. 20

Thumb gusset: 1st row: K. 17, k. 3 times into next st., k. 2, patt. to end.

2nd row: Patt. 22, p. 22.

3rd row: K. 17, inc. into next st., k. 1, inc. into next st., k. 2, patt. to end.

4th row: Patt. 22, p. 24.

5th row: K. 24, patt. 22.

6th row: Patt. 22, p. 24

7th row: K. 17, inc. into next st., k. 3, inc. into next st., k. 2, patt. to end.

Cont. in this way, inc. at each side of thumb gusset on every following 4th row (allowing for 2 extra sts. after each repeat), until there are 10 extra sts. on needle. Work 1 row after last inc. row.

The thumb: K. 29, turn and cast on 1 st.

Next row: P. 13 back, turn and cast on 1 st. Cont. on these 14 sts. for thumb.

Now work the rest of hand as for R. H.

Press gloves lightly with a warm iron over a damp cloth, omitting the ribbing.
