Abbreviations
Pways = Put the sewing needle into the stitch purlways and pull the needle all the way through.
Kways = Put the sewing needle into the stitch knitways and pull the needle all the way through.
RS = Right side of your work WS = Wrong side of your work
Method
Before beginning any grafting it is important to make sure you have your yarn in the correct place to begin.
Place your knitting on two needles with the points of the needles on your right, and the wrong sides of your knitting facing each other.
Tips
When grafting garter stitch you must end your knitting on a wrong side row.
If knitting in the round, end with a purl round.
Your yarn should be connected to the right hand side of your knitting.
Cut your yarn, leaving a long piece to graft the stitches together with. I usually leave 3 times the width of the knitting. Thread the yarn onto a blunt needle.
You are now ready to begin grafting.
First we need to set up the first two stitches.
Put the sewing needle in the first stitch of the front knitting needle purlways and pull the yarn all the way through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Next put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the back knitting needle knitways and pull all the way through. Again, do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle. You have now set up the first two stitches.
** Now put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the front knitting needle knitways and pull the yarn all the way through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the next stitch on the front knitting needle and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the first stitch on the back knitting needle and pull through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle into the next stitch on the back knitting needle knitways and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Rep from ** to the end of your row.
