A collection of gauge swatches knit from various handspun and commercial yarns

Knitting a gauge swatch (also known as a tension square) is almost always an essential part of creating a successful project, especially when proper fitting is an issue (any-gauge patterns such as the feather and fan comfort shawl being an exception).

Working a gauge swatch allows you to find out several things:

  • The number of stitches and rows that fit into 10cm/4"
  • Whether you have chosen the correct size needles for your intended effect
  • How your chosen stitch pattern and yarn work together

You can also use your swatch to test what effect washing and drying has on the finish of your yarn.
