Gauge
From KnitWiki
Gauge describes the tension of your knitting. If you use bigger knitting needles you will have fewer stitches per inch, whereas smaller needles with the same yarn will give you more stitches per inch. This is your gauge.
A finished garment's size is determined by the number of stitches multiplied by the gauge. To create garments that fit correctly following a pattern it is important to match the gauge used by the pattern designer. See: Measuring Gauge
If you are designing your own pattern gauge is also important. Gauge swatches allow you to test different stitch patterns and needle sizes. You should knit several gauge swatches to experiment to obtain a fabric with the ideal drape and texture.
