Double pointed needles are straight needles with points on both ends. They may be made of metal, wood, bamboo or plastic and come in a variety of lengths.

Double pointed needles are most commonly used when knitting items in the round that have a small circumference, such as socks. They are also used for techniques that use few stitches (as a matter of comfort), and techniques that use few stitches and require moving stitches from one end of the needle to the other, such as knitting i-cord.
