Pins No. 10, 9 stitches to a pattern. Eight shades of scarlet four-threaded German wool, 12 rows of each, the shades to be arranged and reversed as No. 2. Cast on 116 stitches (this includes the 8 edge stitches).
First row:—Make 1, knit 5, knit 2 together, pass the wool twice over the pin, knit 2 together, repeat.
Second row:—Seamed. The stitches that were passed twice over the pin to be knitted only as 1 stitch.
Third row:—Knit 1, make 1, knit 4, knit 2 together, pass the wool twice over the pin, knit 2 together, repeat.
Fourth row:—Seamed as before.
Fifth row:—Knit 2, make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, pass the wool twice over the pin, knit 2 together, repeat.
Sixth row:—Seamed as before.
Seventh row:—Knit 3, make 1, knit 2, knit 2 together, pass the wool twice over the pin, knit 2 together, and repeat.
Eighth row:—Seamed.
Ninth row:—Knit 4, make 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, pass the wool twice over the pin, knit 2 together, and repeat.
Tenth row:—Seamed.
Eleventh row:—Knit 5, make 1, knit 2 together, pass the wool twice over the pin, knit 2 together, and repeat.
Twelfth row:—Seamed, then repeat from the 1st row.

Use 8 shades of red yarn, beginning with the darkest, and working 12 rows of each, then reversing colours starting with the second lightest shade.
Cast on any number of stitches divisible by 9, plus 8 more for the edges
Rows 1 - 4: k across

Row 5: k4, *yo, k5, k2tog, double yo, k2tog, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 6: k4, purl to last four stitches (double yo's purled as one stitch), k4
Row 7: k4, *k1, yo, k4, k2tog, double yo, k2tog, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 8: k4, purl to last four stitches (double yo's purled as one stitch), k4
Row 9: k4, *k2, yo, k3, k2tog, double yo, k2tog, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 10: k4, purl to last four stitches (double yo's purled as one stitch), k4
Row 11: k4, *k3, yo, k2, k2tog, double yo, k2tog, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 12: k4, purl to last four stitches (double yo's purled as one stitch), k4
Row 13: k4, *k4, yo, k1, k2tog, double yo, k2tog, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 14: k4, purl to last four stitches (double yo's purled as one stitch), k4
Row 15: k4, *k5, yo, k2tog, double yo, k2tog, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 16: k4, purl to last four stitches (double yo's purled as one stitch), k4
Repeat knitted and colour pattern to desired length.
Last 4 Rows: Knit across
Cast off.
