Swatch was knit using US6 size needles and fingering weight yarn.

Pins No. 10, 8 stitches to a pattern: 14 shades of orange 4-threaded German wool, beginning with the darkest, and working 6 rows of each: 4 plain rows to begin and end the cover; and 4 plain stitches at the beginning and end of every row, for an edge. These edge stitches are not mentioned with the pattern, but will be included in the number cast on. Cast on 112 stitches.
First row:—Make 1, knit 1, make 1, knit 2, slip 1, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over, knit 2, and repeat.
Second row:—Seamed.
Third row:—Make 1, knit 3, make 1, knit 1, slip 1, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over, knit 1, and repeat.
Fourth row:—Seamed.
Fifth row:—Make 1, knit 5, make 1, slip 1, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over, and repeat.
Sixth row:—Seamed. Repeat from 1st row.
When 6 rows of each shade have been done, reverse them by continuing with the 2d lightest shade.

Needle size: US 3 / 3.25mm
[edit] Colour pattern
Use 14 shades of orange yarn, beginning with the darkest, and working 6 rows of each, then reversing colours starting with 2nd lightest shade. Rows 1 - 4 are not part of the colour pattern and should be worked in the darkest shade (in other words, the darkest yarn will be worked over 10 rows each time, not 6)
Cast on any number of stitches divisible by 8, plus 8 more for the edges.
Row 1 - 4: k across

Row 5: k4, *yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k2tog, psso, k2, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 6: k4, purl across to last four stitches, k4
Row 7: k4, *yo, k3, yo, k1, sl1, k2tog, psso, k1, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 8: k4, purl across to last four stitches, k4
Row 9: k4, *yo, k5, yo, sl1, k2tog, psso, repeat from * to last four stitches, k4
Row 10: k4, purl across to last four stitches, k4
Repeat knitted and colour pattern to desired length.
Last 4 Rows: Knit across
Cast off.
