A gauge of 34sts to 4“ will create a sock that measures 6” around the top. This equates approximately to a modern sock to fit 6-9 months of age.

Materials

You will need fine fingering weight yarn in white and one colour
US size 1 / metric 2.25mm needles or size needed to get gauge.

Pattern

Using your coloured wool cast on 50sts and work 2 rows of k2 p2 rib.
3rd row: Knit
4th row: Purl
5th row: *yo, k2tog; repeat form * to the end of the row
6th row: Slip the first stitch purlways, knit to the end of the row
Repeat from the 3rd row
11th row: Slip the first stitch purlways, knit to the end of the row
Change to white yarn
12th row: Slip the first stitch purlways, purl to the end of the row
13th row: Knit
Work 12 rows of k2 p2 rib
Repeat rows 3 – 6 four times
42nd row: Slip the first stitch purlways, knit to the end of the row
43rd row: Slip the first stitch purlways, purl to the end of the row
44th row: Changed to coloured yarn, slip 1st stitch, k10, k2tog, k20, k2tog, k10, k2tog twice, knit to the end. (46sts)
45th row: Slip 1 st, knit the rest
46th row: Slip 1, k2tog, k40, k2tog, knit to the end (44sts)
47th row: Slip 1, knit to the end
48th row: Slip 1, k13. Join the white yarn and knit 16 (do not cut the coloured yarn). Leave the remaining stitches on a holder for the other side of the heel.
Working on the 16 white stitches only, slip the first stitch, p15
Knit
Purl
*yo, k2tog; repeat form * to the end of the row
Slip the first stitch purlways, knit to the end of the row
Repeat the last 4 rows 4 times more to complete the instep.
Cast off.
Take up the coloured yarn where it was left off.
Pick up 11sts up the side of the instep, cast on 11 (36sts)
Knit 7 rows
8th row: Slip 1, k30, k2tog, knit 3 (35sts)
9th row: Knit 10th row: Slip 1, k31, k2tog, knit 1 (34sts)
11th row: Knit
12th row: Slip 1, k2tog, knit to the last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 (32sts)
13th row: Knit
14th row: Slip 1, K2tog twice, knit to the last 5 sts, k2tog twice, k1 (28sts)
15th row: Knit
16th row: Slip 1, k2tog twice, knit to the last 5 sts, k2tog twice, k1 (24sts) 17th row: Knit
18th row: Slip 1, k2tog, knit ot the last 5 sts, k2tog twice, k1 (21sts)
19th row: Knit
Bind off.
Join the coloured wool to the toe of the sock at the point where you cast on 11sts. Pick up and knit 11sts from the cast on edge.
Knit 11 stitches just picked up, knit 1 from the remaining stitches, turn
Knit 12, turn,
knit 13, turn,
k13, turn,
Knit 14, turn,
k14, turn,
Continue knitting one more stitch every second row in this manner until you have 18sts.
Turn, knit 18.
You will now work one less stitch every second row.
Next row: Knit 17, wrap and turn, knit 17, turn,
Next row: K16, wrap and turn, k16, turn,
and so on until you are back to 11sts.
Pick up and knit 11sts from the instep and knit the 14 remaining coloured stitches. (36sts)
Work shaping as for the other side.

Making up

Join all seams using a neat mattress stitch.
