Work 4 ins in rib of (K1, P1).

Work 4 ins in plain knitting.

Proceed as follows:

1st round: K1, K2tog, knit plain to last 3 sts of round, slip 1, K1, psso, K1.

Work 6 rounds without shaping.

Repeat these 7 rounds until 21 sts remain on each of first and third needles.

Continue without shaping until work measures 11 ins from commencement.

To commence heel, K17, slip last 17 sts of round on to other end of same needle (these 34 sts are for heel).

Divide remaining sts on to two needles and leave for instep.

On heel sts, work 33 rows in alternate rows of purl and plain (always slipping first stitch purlways on a purl row and knitways on a knit row).

To turn heel:

K19, K2tog, K1, turn;

P6, P2tog, P1, turn;

K7, K2tog, K1, turn;

P8, P2tog, P1, turn;

K9, K2tog, K1, turn;

P10, P2tog, P1, turn.

Continue in this manner until all sts are worked onto one needle. Knit back 10 sts (thus completing heel).

Slip all instep sts on to one needle.

Taking another needle, knit remaining 10sts of heel, knit up 17 sts at side of heel; with a second needle knit plain across instep sts; with a third needle, knit up 17 sts at side of heel and other 10 sts of heel.

Knit 1 round.

second needle, knit plain;
third needle, K2, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to end of needle.

2nd round: Knit plain.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rounds until 16 sts remain on each of first and third needles.

Continue without shaping until foot measures (from where sts were knitted up at side of heel):
6 ins for a 10-inch foot;
6t ins. for a 10½-inch foot;
7 ins. for an 11-inch foot.

Proceed as follows:
