Measurement

Foot – 10½, 11, or 11½ ins

Tension

It is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 9½ stitches to the inch in width on No. 13 Needles.

Pattern

Using No. 14 Needles and Grey Wool, cast on 88 stitches (28, 32, 28).

1st round: * K2, P2, repeat from * to end of round.

Repeat this round until work measures 4 ins

Using No. 13 Needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st round: Knit plain.

Repeat 1st round eleven times.

Using Maroon Wool, repeat 1st round once.

Break off Maroon Wool.

Using Grey Wool, repeat 1st round once.

Using Navy Wool, repeat 1st round once.

Break off Navy Wool. **

Repeat from ** to ** three times.

Keeping continuity of pattern, proceed as follows:

1st round: K1, K2tog, knit plain to last 3 sts, slip 1, K1, psso, K1.

Work 5 rounds without shaping.

Repeat these 6 rounds five times (76 sts).

To commence heel:

K18, slip last 18 sts of round onto other end of same needle (these 36 sts are for heel). Divide remaining sts onto two needles and leave for instep.

Work 35 rows on heel sts in alternate rows of purl and plain, always slipping first st purlways on a purl row and knitways on a knit row.

To turn heel:

K21, K2tog, K1 , turn,
P8, P2tog, P1, turn,
K9, K2tog, K1, turn,
P10, P2tog, P1, turn,
K11, K2tog, K1, turn.

Continue in this manner until all sts are worked onto one needle (22 sts)

Knit back 11 sts (thus completing heel), slip all instep sts onto one needle again.

Taking another needle, knit remaining 11 sts of heel, knit up 18 sts at side of heel: with a second needle, knit plain across instep sts; with a third needle, knit up 18 sts at side of heel and remaining 11 sts of heel.

Knit 1 round.

Shape for instep as follows:

1st round: First needle – knit plain to last 3 sts, K2tog,
K1; second needle – knit plain; third needle – K1, slip 1,
K1, psso, knit plain to end of needle.

2nd round: Knit plain.

Keeping continuity of stripes on instep sts (2nd needle) (twisting colours where they meet, thus avoiding a gap), repeat 1st and 2nd rounds until 76 sts remain in round.

Continue in pattern without shaping until work measures (from where sts were knitted up at side of heel):

6½ ins for 10½ -inch foot;
7 ins for 11-inch foot;
7½ ins for 11½ -inch foot.

Slip first st of second needle onto end of first needle, and last st of second needle onto beginning of third needle (19, 38, 19).

Using Grey Wool only, shape for toe as follows:

1st round: First needle – knit plain to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1;
second needle – K1, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1;
third needle – K1, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to end of needle.

2nd round: Knit plain.

Repeat these 2 rounds until 24 sts remain in round.

Knit sts of first needle onto end of third needle.

Graft these sts

Using Maroon Wool, work a line of stem-stitch down centre back, between first and last sts of round, commencing below ribbing and ending at beginning of heel flap.

Work similar vertical lines round sock, leaving 11 sts between each, and carrying the instep lines to beginning of toe shaping.

Work another Sock in same manner.

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.
