Pattern

Using no. 14 needles and main Colour, cast on 90 stitches (30, 30, 30) – (30 stitches on each needle)

1st round: * K1, P1, repeat from * to end of round.

Repeat this round until work measures 4 ins

Using No. 13 needles, proceed as follows:

1st round: Using Contrasting Colour, * K5, slip 1, repeat from * to end of round.

NOTE: Always knit into the back of slipped sts of previous row and always bring the new colour from behind the old.

2nd round: Using Main Colour, K2, * slip 1, K5, repeat from * to last 4 sts, slip 1, K3.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rounds until work measures 8 ins from commencement.

Proceed as follows:

1st round: Using Contrasting Colour, K2tog, K3, slip 1, * K5, slip 1, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K3, K2tog tbl, slip 1, (this last slip stitch is the back seam stitch).

Work 7 rounds in pattern without shaping.

Continue in pattern, decreasing once at each side of seam stitch in next and every 8th round until 76 sts remain in round.

Break off Contrasting Colour.

To commence heel:

K17, slip last 18 sts of round onto other end of same needle (these 35 sts. are for heel).

Divide remaining sts onto two needles and leave for instep.

Work 35 rows on heel sts. in alternate rows of purl and plain, always slipping first st purlways on a purl row and knitways on a knit row.

To turn heel:

K22, K2tog, K1, turn,
P11, P2tog, P1, turn,
K12, K2tog, K1, turn,
P13, P2tog, P1, turn,
K14, K2tog, K1, turn.

Continue in this manner, until all sts are worked onto one needle (23 sts).

Knit back 11 sts (thus completing heel), slip all instep sts onto one needle again.

Taking another needle, knit remaining 12 sts of heel, knit up 18 sts at side of heel; with a second needle, work in pattern across instep sts; with a third needle slip last st of second needle onto third needle, knit up 18 sts at side of heel and remaining 11 sts of heel (30, 40, 30).

Shape for instep as follows:

1st round: Using Contrasting Colour, first needle – knit plain;
second needle – work in pattern;
third needle – knit plain.

2nd round: Using Main Colour, first needle – knit plain to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1; second needle – work in
pattern; third needle – K1, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain
to end of needle

Keeping continuity of pattern on instep sts and alternate
rows of main and Contrasting Colours on foot, repeat 1st and 2nd rounds until 76 sts remain in round.

Continue in pattern without shaping until foot measures
(from where sts were knitted up at side of heel):

6½ ins for 10½-inch foot;
7 ins for 11-inch foot;
7½ ins for 11½-inch foot.

Slip first st of second needle onto first needle, and
last st of second needle onto third needle (19, 38, 19).

Repeat these 2 rounds until 24 sts remain in round.

Knit sts of first needle onto end of third needle.

Graft these sts
