Materials

Patons Beehive Fingering 4 ply

Brown - 3 ozs.
Fawn - 2 ozs.

Knitting Needles, 1 set of four UK No 13/2.25mm/US 1 and 1 pair of UK No 14/2mm/US 0

A Stitch holder.

Measurement

Foot 11 or 12 ins

Tension

It is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 9 stitches to the inch in width on No. 13 Needles.

Pattern

NOTE: Do not break off wools, but carry loosely up side of work.

Using No. 14 Needles and Brown Wool, cast on 80 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat 1st row until work measures 4 ins, decreasing once at end of needle in last row.

Using two No. 13 Needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: Using Fawn Wool, knit plain.

2nd row: Using Fawn Wool, K1, purl to last st, K1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th row: Using Brown Wool, knit plain.

8th row: Do not turn work round, but with right side of work facing and using Fawn Wool, knit plain.

Repeat 2nd row once, then 1st and 2nd rows twice.

14th row: Do not turn work round, but with wrong side of work facing and using Brown Wool, K1, purl to last st, K1.

15th row: With right side of work facing and using Fawn Wool, knit plain.

16th row: With right side of work facing and using Brown Wool, knit plain.

17th row: With wrong side of work facing and using Fawn Wool, K1, purl to last st, K1.

18th row: With wrong side of work facing and using Brown Wool, K1, purl to last st, K1.

Repeat 15th and 16th rows once, then 17th and 18th rows once.

Using Brown Wool, repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice, then 1st row once.

28th row: With right side of work facing and using Fawn Wool, knit plain.

Using Brown Wool, repeat 2nd row once, 1st and 2nd rows twice, then 1st row once. ***

Repeat 17th and 18th rows one, then 15th and 16th rows once. ***

Repeat from *** to *** once. **

Work stripes as given from ** to ** commencing first row with purl instead of plain.

To arrange heel sts:

Slip first 20 sts onto third needle. Slip last 20 sts onto fourth needle. Leave these 2 needles for heel.

Keeping continuity of stripes, join in Brown Wool and work on remaining 39 sts until the 4th set of stripes has been completed.

Work as given from 1st to 13th row once. Leave these sts on stitch holder.

To commence heel:

Slip heel sts onto one needle (40 sts).

With wrong side of work facing, and using Brown Wool, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, P18, P2tog, P18, K1. (39 sts)

2nd row: * K1, slip 1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

3rd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows twenty times, then 2nd row once.

To turn heel :

K1, P19, P2tog, P1, turn,
K3, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, turn,
P4, P2tog, P1 , turn,
K5, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, turn,
P6, P2tog, P1, turn.

Continue in this manner until all sts are worked onto one needle (21 sts). Break off Wool.

Do not leave wool without breaking, otherwise it will be difficult to replace a worn-out heel.

In next row: Using Fawn Wool, knit plain.

With right side of work facing, join in Brown Wool, cast on 18 sts, K18, knit across 21 heel sts, cast on 18 sts (57 sts)

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, K2tog, knit plain to last 3 sts, slip 1, K1, psso, K1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows until 35 sts remain.

Continue in plain smooth fabric, until work measures same as instep, ending with a purl row.

In next row: K17; with a second needle, knit remaining 18 sts; with a third needle, knit across 39 instep sts from stitch holder.

Working in rounds, continue in plain knitting until work measures (from where sts were cast on for instep):

7¼ ins for 11-inch foot;
8¼ ins for 12-inch foot.

First needle, 18 sts; second needle, 39 sts; third needle, 17 sts

Slip one st from each end of second needle onto first and third needles. (19, 37, 18)

Shape for toe as follows:

1st round: First needle - knit plain to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; second needle - K1, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; third needle - K1, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to end of needle.

2nd round: Knit plain.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rounds until 30 sts remain in round.

Knit sts of first needle onto end of third needle.

Using Fawn Wool, graft these sts

Work another Sock in same manner.

To Make Up Socks

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up back, heel and foot seams.

Finally, press all seams.
