Scarf Squared, and Matching Skull Cap

Free knitting pattern for a unique knitted lace scarf and matching skull cap. Brought to you by Southern Cross Knitting Magazine.

Size

Scarf

length: approximately 125cm
Width of eyelet section: 15cm

Skull Cap

fits head circumference 50-55cm

Materials

Yarn: 1x100gm skein of Touch Yarns 12 ply Brushed Kid Mohair/Merino Wool in colour 527 (Sky), 220m per 100gm, will make both the scarf and the skullcap.

Needles:
4.5mm 40cm long circular needle, 5.5mm 40cm long circular needle, and a set of 5.5mm dpns.

If you prefer to knit the scarf on straight needles, you will need a pair of both 4.5mm and 5.5mm needles.

Tension

16sts to 10cm over stocking stitch on 5.5mm needles.

Abbreviations/Chart Key

 = K – Knit
 = p – Purl
 = Yo – Yarn over
 = K2tog – Knit 2 together
 = SSK – Slip, slip, knit.SSK is an alternative way of working the old “slip 1, K1, pass slipped st over”, which is a leftward slanting decrease. Slip the next st from left hand needle to right hand needle knitways. Slip next st the same way. Return both sts to left hand needle in their new twisted positions and knit the two stitches together.
 = Sl2tog, k1, psso – Slip 2 stitches together knitways, knit 1, pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch just knit

Patterns

Scarf

Using 5.5mm needles, cast on 24sts and knit 2 rows.

Begin eyelet stitch pattern

Lace knitting chart

In words:

1st row: K1, ssk, *(yo) twice, sl2tog, k1, psso; rep from * to last 3 sts, (yo) twice, k2tog, k1

2nd row: K3, p1 *K2, p1; rep from * until 2sts remain, k2

3rd and 4th rows: Knit

These 4 rows form the eyelet pattern for the ends of the scarf. Repeat these 4 rows another 23 times.

Change to 4.5mm needles.

Next row: (K2, p2) 6 times.

Repeat this row until the ribbed section of the scarf measures 35cm.

Change back to 5.5mm needles and knit 2 rows.

Work 24 repeats of the eyelet stitch pattern. Cast off.

Wash your scarf and bock the lace ends lightly.

Skull Cap

Using 4.5mm needles, cast on 84sts and work 5 rounds of k2, p2 rib.

Purl 1 round

The next 2 rounds are worked in the eyelet stitch pattern as follows:

In words:

1st round: *(Yo) twice, sl2tog, k1, psso; rep from * to the end of the round.

2nd round: *P1, k2; repeat from * to the end of the round

Continue in k2, p2 rib until cap measures 7cm from the cast on edge.

Change to 5.5mm needles.

Decrease for crown:

(K12, K2tog) 6 times (78sts)

Knit 2 rounds

(K11, K2tog) 6 times (72sts)

Knit 2 rounds

(k10, k2tog) 6 times (66sts)

Knit 1 round

(k9, k2tog) 6 times (60sts)

Knit 1 round

(k8, k2tog) 6 times (54sts)

Knit 1 round

(k7, k2tog) 6 times (48sts)

Knit 1 round

(k6, k2tog) 6 times (42sts)

Knit 1 round

(k5, k2tog) 6 times (36sts)

Knit 1 round

(k4, k2tog) 6 times (30sts)

Knit 1 round

(K3, k2tog) 6 times (24sts)

(K2, k2tog) 6 times (18sts)

(K1, k2tog) 6 times (12sts)

(K2tog) 6 times (6sts). Cut yarn, thread through the remaining sts and fasten off.

Darn in all loose ends.
