Knut Hat

Knitted baby hat

I originally designed this little baby hat to show the way the sample yarns in my tutorial on spinning handpainted roving knit up. It turned out so cute that I decided to include the pattern as well! These hats only take me an hour to knit (and I'm a notoriously slow knitter), so they make great last minute baby gifts.

I used handspun wool but you can use any commercial 12 ply yarn.

Size

To fit 40cm head (approximately 3-6 month size)

Materials

Yarn: Approx 70m of 12 ply wool. I used 35gm of merino wool that I dyed and hand spun.
Suitable commercial substitutes include:
50gm of Cleckheaton Country 12 ply which has 71m per skein,
Panda Magnum 12 ply (if you like acrylic). 1 x 100gm skein will make 2 1/2 hats.

Needles: 40cm long circular needle in sizes 4.5mm and 5mm
Set of 5mm dpns

Tension

17sts to 10cm on 5mm needles

Pattern

Using 4.5mm needle cast on 72sts and work 2.5cm k1, p1 rib.

Change to 5mm needles and continue in stocking stitch (knit every round) until your knitting measures 9.25cm from the cast on edge.

Decrease for top as follows:

1st round: (K10, k2tog); repeat to end of round

Knit 2 rounds

4th round: (K9, k2tog); repeat to end of round

Knit 1 round

6th round: (K8, k2tog); repeat to end of round

Knit 1 round

8th round: (K7, k2tog); repeat to end of round

Knit 1 round

10th round: (K6, k2tog); repeat to end of round

Knit 1 round

12th round: (K5, k2tog); repeat to end of round

13th round: (K4, k2tog); repeat to end of round

14th round: (K3, k2tog); repeat to end of round

15th round: (K2, k2tog); repeat to end of round

16th round: (K1, k2tog); repeat to end of round

17th round: K2tog six times

18th round: K2tog three times

Knit icord on these 3 stitches for 5cm.

Knit 3 together and fasten off.

Finishing

Darn in ends. Wash and block.

Note: Make sure you have enough yarn to knit more than one of these hats before you start as they're quite addictive!
