Cedar, vintage cabled skull cap

This pattern can very quickly be brought up to date with the addition of a ribbed band and simple ear-flaps.

Materials

2 balls of Fuzzy Wuzzy fingering weight 55% angora, 45% wool

1 pair old UK size 10 / US 3 / Metric 3.25mm needles

Gauge

It is absolutely necessary to work at a
tension to produce 7½ stitches to the inch in width,
measured stocking stitch

Size

Circumference at lower edge, 21″

Abbreviations

Cr.1F. – Cross 1 Front by slipping next st. onto cable needle and leaving at front of work, knit the next 2 sts., knit stitch from cable needle.

Cr.2B. – Cross 2 Back by slipping next 2 sts. on to cable needle and leaving at back of work, K1, then knit the 2 sts. from cable needle.

Pattern

Cast on 142 stitches.

Work 2 rows in K1, P1 rib.

Proceed in reverse stocking stitch with mock cables as follows:

1st row: P8, (K6, P14) six times, K6, P8.

2nd row: K8, (P6, K14) six times, P6, K8.

3rd row: P8, (Cr.1F., Cr.2B., P14) six times, Cr.1F., Cr.2B., P8.

4th row: As 2nd row.

Work these 4 rows twice more.

Next row: P1, P2tog, P5, [K6, P5, (P2tog) twice, P5] six times, K6, P5, P2tog, P1. (128 sts)

Next row: K7, (P6, K12) six times, P6, K7.

Keeping patt. correct, work 6 rows.

Next row: P1, P2tog, P4, [K6, P4, (P2tog) twice, P4] six times, K6, P4, P2tog, P1. (114 sts)

Work 7 rows.

Continue in this manner, dec. in centre of reverse stocking stitch panels as before on next and every following 8th row until 72 sts. remain.

Work 3 rows.

Work peak as follows:

1st row: Purl.

2nd row: Knit.

3rd row: K.4, * (K2tog) twice, K2, K2tog, K2; rep. from * to last 8 sts., (K2tog) twice, K1, K2tog, K1. (51 sts)

4th and 5th rows: Purl.

6th row: Knit.

7th row: K3, (slip 1, K2tog, psso, K4) six times, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K3.

8th and 9th rows: Purl.

10th and 11th rows: Knit.

12th and 13th rows: Purl.

** 14th row: Knit.

15th row: K2, (slip 1, K2tog, psso, K2) six times, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K2.

16th-22nd rows: As 8th-14th rows inclusive.

23rd row: K1, (slip 1, K2tog, psso.) six times, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K1. (9 sts)

24th and 25th rows: Purl.

26th row: K1, (K2tog) four times, thread wool through remaining sts., draw up and fasten off securely.

Bells

Cast on 37 stitches.

1st row: Purl.

Work as peak of Cap from ** to end.

Work another Bell in same manner.

Finishing

Hat

With a dry cloth and warm iron, press carefully.

Using a fine back-stitch seam join seam.

Turn up 2 rows of K1, P1 rib and stitch down lightly on wrong side of work.

Bells

Using a back-stitch seam, join seam.

Using 3 strands 40 ins. long, make a twisted cord. Attach a bell to each end of cord, forming cord into a loop inside Bells and allowing 1 Bell to fall below the other, stitch cord to point of Hat.
