Birch Beanie

Free knitting pattern for a vintage beanie topped with a covered button

Materials

3 balls of Patons Double Quick Knitting (DK weight) wool

1 pair old UK No 8 / US 6 / Metric 4mm needles

Gauge

5½ stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch worked on 4mm needles

Size

To ft 20″-22″

Pattern

Cast on 112 stitches.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd row for 3½ ins., ending with a purl row.

Commence crown in rib patt. as follows:

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to end of row.

2nd row: Purl.

These 2 rows form the patt.
Continue in patt. until work measures 7½ ins. from beg., finishing at end of a purl row.

Shape top as follows:

1st row: K1, * P1, slip 1, K2tog, psso, rep. from * to last 3 sts, P1, K1, P1. (58 sts)

2nd-4th rows: Work in patt.

5th row: * Slip 1, K2tog, psso, P1, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K1, P1. (30 sts)

6th-8th rows: Work in patt.

9th row: K1, * P1, slip 1, K2tog, psso, rep. from * to last st, P1. (16 sts)

10th row: Purl.

11th row: * Slip 1, K2tog, psso, P1, rep. from * to end of row.

Thread wool through remaining sts., draw up and fasten off securely.

Finishing

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly on wrong side.

Using a fine back-stitch seam, join seam. Fold stocking stitch section in half and stitch into position on wrong side to form brim. Press seam.

Make covering for button as follows:

Using wool double, cast on 8 sts. and work 12 rows stocking stitch.

Break off wool, thread wool through sts and fasten off securely. Cover button and attach to centre of crown.
