Note: This pattern uses old UK needle sizes
Materials:
Coats Mercer-Crochet No. 10 (20 gm): 8 balls.
1 pair Knitting Needles No. 14.
1 Circular Knitting Needle No. 14.
The above quantity is sufficient for one Centrepiece, 4 Place Mats and 4 Glass Mats.
Tension:
10 sts to 1" measured over the st .st.
Measurements:
Centrepiece from
centre to point, 10 1/2"
Place Mat -from centre to point, 4 1/2"
Glass Mat-from centre to point, 2 1/2"

CENTREPIECE
Using circular needle, cast on 666 sts.
1st Row K.
2nd Row: P.
3rd Row: K.
4th Row: P1, * yo, p2tog; repeat
from * to last st, p1.
5th Row: K.
6th Row: P.
7th Row: K.
8th Row: P.
9th Row: * P1, k65, p2, k65;
repeat from * to last st, p1.
10th Row: * K1, p65, k2, p65;
repeat from * to last st, k1.
11th Row: * P1, yo, k59, (k2tog)
3 times, p2, (sl 1, k1, psso) 3 times,
k59, yo; repeat from * to last st, P1.
12th Row: * K1, p63, k2, p63;
repeat from * to last st, k1.
13th Row: * P1, yo, k57, (k2tog)
3 times, p2, (sl 1, k1, psso) 3 times,
k57, yo; repeat from * to last st, P1.
14th Row: K1, p1, * yo, p2 tog; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k1, p1.
** Work in this way, decreasing on smooth-side rows 3 times at each side of the 2 purl sts, and increasing on these same rows at each side of the single purl st, whilst every 3rd wrong side row is worked as 14th row to give a row of holes.
Continue until 66 sts remain, finishing with the return purl side row.
Next Row: * P1, yo, k1, (k2tog) twice, p2, (sl 1, k1, psso) twice, k1, yo; repeat from * to last st, p1.
Next Row: K1, * p4, k2, p4, k1; repeat from * to end.
Next Row: * P1, (k2tog) twice,
p2, (k2tog) twice; repeat from *
to last st, p1.
Next Row: * K1, p2, k2, p2;
repeat from * to last st, k1.
Next Row: * P1, k2tog, p2tog,
k2tog; repeat from * to last st, p1.
Cut cotton and thread end through remaining sts. Pull up tightly and secure. Sew up seam with same cotton. Turn hem at outer edge. Press with a hot iron and damp cloth, pulling out points to greatest extent.
PLACE MAT
Using the pair of No. 14 needles, cast
on 306 sts. Work as for centrepiece
from 1st to 8th row.
9th Row: * P1, k29, p2, k29;
repeat from * to last st, p1.
10th Row: K1, * p29, k2, p29,
k1; repeat from * to end.
11th Row: * P1, yo, k23, (k2tog)
3 times, p2, (sl 1, k1, psso) 3 times,

k1; repeat from * to end.
11th Row: * P1, yo, k7, (k2tog)
3 times, p2, (sl 1, k1, psso) 3 times,
k 7, yo; repeat from * to last st, p1.
12th Row: K1, * p11, k2, p11,
k1; repeat from * to end.
13th Row: * P1, yo, k5, (k2tog)
3 times, p2, (sl 1, k1, psso) 3 times,
