Pattern
Small Mat
With crochet hook make 4 ch and form into a ring with a sl st.
Work 8 dc into this ring.
Using needles k 1 st into top edge of each dc (2 sts on each of 4 needles)
Work in rounds thus:
1st round: Winding thread twice round needle instead of once for each st k to end
2nd round: * k1 dropping extra loop, (yo) twice.
K1 dropping extra loop. Rep from * to end.

48th round: Sl st to centre of first lp, then work another round of 10 ch lps worked into centre of previous lps, joining last 10 ch lp to beg of first lp
Fasten off.
Large Mat
Work exactly as given for small mat to the end of the 26th round. Fasten off.
Make a second mat in the same way, joining one side edge of this mat to the first mat when working the 26th round, by working 5 ch, a sl st into centre of corresponding 10 ch loop, 5 ch, all along edge.
Now cont in this way, making 16 small mats in all and joining them in rows of 4, thus, when completed there will be 4 rows of 4 mats in each When working 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows join 2nd,
3rd and 4th mats on 2 sides each (156 ch loops all roundmat).
When mats are joined to form one large mat work
as for 27th round of small mat a follows:
Begin working into a 10 ch loop following the centre
point of the
leaf in the small mat motif and knit up 5 sts into each 10 ch lp and 10 sts into each corner loop(800 sts)
NB: It will be found more
convenient to work
with extra needles owing to the number
of sts in round. Always arrange
sts
to have a number divisible by 25 on each needle beginning
round
at the centre point of the leaf motif.
Now k 3 rounds plain, then rep patt rounds 31 to 45 in-clusive as for small mat once.
46th round: k to end, knitting twice into each of the 3 corner sts in each corner.
47th round: Work as given for small mat, working 10 ch lps worked into groups of sts with 1 tr and 8 ch loops worked into centre point of the medallion and 10 ch lps worked through only 2 sts 3 times at each corner.
Fasten off. Starch mats, pull into shape and press.
