Knitted Lace Luncheon Mats

These mats look crisp and fresh on polished tables. They are easy to launder and can be ironed in a jiffy. The large mats may also serve as tray-cloths and the glass mats as d'oyleys. Eight balls of cotton make a setting for four.

Worked on four needles and finished with an easy crochet edging, this lacy knitted cotton set is long-lasting and serviceable.

Materials:
8 balls of Coats Chain Mercer Cotton no 20 (20gm)
One set of Milwards double pointed knitting needles No 13;
Milwards steel crochet hook No 3

Measurements:
Place-mat: 12 inches in diameter;
Glass-mat: 7 inches in diameter.

Abbreviations:
K = knit;
P = purl;
tog = together;
sl = slip;
yfd = yarn forward;
psso = pass slip-stitch over
st = Stitch;
yrn = yarn round needle;
ch = chain;
sl-st = slip stitch;
dc = double crochet.

Place-mat:
Cast on 8 sts and divide sts onto 3 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts.

1st and 2nd Rows: Knit.

3rd Row: (yfd, k 1 ) 8 times.

4th to 6th Row: Knit.

7th Row: (yfd, k1) 16 times.

8th to 12th Row: Knit.

13th Row: * K2tog, thread over needle twice, sl1, k1, psso, rep. from * to end of row.

14th Row: K1, allow first over to slip off left-hand needle, work 9 sts into next over {to work 9 sts into one (k1, p1) 4 times, k1}, k2, drop one over, work 9 sts into next over, rep from * ending with k1 (88 sts)

15th to 24th Row: Knit

25th Row: (yfd, k11) 8 times

26th and All Even Rows: Knit

27th Row: (yfd, k1, yfd, k11) 8 times

29th Row: * yfd, k3, yfd, k4, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, rep from * to end of row (112 sts)

63rd to 66th Row: Knit.

68th to 71st Row: Knit

72nd Row: (yfd, k1),7 times, * (sl1, k1, psso) 5 times, (k2tog) 5 times, (k1, yfd) 14 times, k1, rep from * ending with (k1, yfd) 7 times, k1 (312 sts)

73rd to 76th Row: Knit

77th Row: (yfd, k1) 7 times, * yfd, (sl1 , k1, psso) 6 times, (k2tog) 6 times, (yfd, k1) 15 times, rep from * ending with (yfd, k1) 8 times (344 sts)

78th to 81st Row. Knit

82nd Row: Insert crochet hook into each of first 4 sts, thread over and pull through all sts, slip 4 sts off needle, * 5 ch., insert hook into each of next 4 sts, thread over and pull through all 4 sts, thread over and pull through remaining 2 loops, slip 4 sts off, needle (1 dc made), rep from * ending with 5 ch, 1 sl-st into first ch. Fasten off.

Glass-Mat:
Work same as place-mat for 51 rows.

52nd Row: * (1 dc into , next 3 sts, 5 ch) twice, (1 dc into next 4 sts, 5 ch) twice (1 dc into next 3 sts, 5 ch)  twice, 1 dc into next st, 5 ch,  rep from * join with a sl st into first ch. Fasten off. Dampen and pin out to measurements.
