9 Skeins (1 oz)
Lincoln Mills Golden Wattle 4-ply fingering wool

1 pair UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 and

set of 4 (double pointed) UK No 12/2.75mm/US 2 knitting needles

Measurements

All round underarm, 38 inches. Depth from shoulder, 21½ inches.

Tension

(when pressed) 28 rows (1 pattern), 3¼ inches; 24 sts (1 pattern), 3 inches.

Pattern

Back

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 121 sts

Work in K1, P1, ribbing for 3 inches, increasing in every 9th st to 133 sts in last row of ribbing.

Change to No. 9 needles and commence pattern.

1st Row: K1, P5, * K1, P7, (K1, P1) 4 times, K1, P7, repeat from * to last 7 sts, K1, P5, K1.

2nd and Every Alternate Row: Follow the knit and purl sts, knitting the first and last sts

3rd Row: K1, P5, * K1, P6 (needle to front, knit 2nd st, purl 1st st, releasing both sts together) twice, P1, K1, P1,
(needle to back purl 2nd st through back of st, knit 1st st, releasing both sts together) twice, P6 , repeat from * to last 7 sts, K1, P5, K1.

5th Row: K1, P5, * K1, P5, (N.T.F. knit 2nd st, purl 1st st) twice, P2, K1, P2, (N.T.B. purl 2nd st, knit 1st st) twice, P5, repeat from * to last 7 sts, K1, P5, K1.

28th Row: Increase 1 st at beginning and end of row.

27th Row: K1, P7, * K1, P6, (N.T.B. purl 2nd st, knit 1st st) twice, P1, K1, P1, (N.T.F. knit 2nd st, purl 1st st) twice, P6, repeat from * to last 9 sts, K1, P7, K1.

28th Row: As 2nd row.

Rows 1 to 28 (without the increase) complete the pattern.

Continue to work in pattern, increasing 1 st at beginning and end of every 14th row until there are 145 sts (86 rows).

Armhole Shaping

Cast off 9 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st at beginning and end of next then every alternate row until 111 sts remain.

Continue without further decrease until work measures 21 inches.

Shoulder Shaping

Cast off 11 sts from beginning of next 4 rows, and 12 sts from beginning of next 2 rows. Leave remaining 43 sts on a spare needle.

Front

Work as for Back, completing the 86th row of pattern.

Armhole Shaping

1st Row: Cast off 9 sts. Work next 63 sts in pattern. Cast off centre st, work to end of row.

2nd Row: Cast off 9 sts, work next 63 sts. Leave remaining 63 sts on spare needle.

3rd Row: K2tog, pattern to last 3 sts, P2tog, K1.

4th Row: K1, P2tog, work to end of row.

5th Row: K2tog, pattern to last 3 sts, P2tog, K1.

6th Row: K1, K2tog, work to end of row.

7th Row: As 5th row.

8th Row: As 4th row.

9th Row: K2tog, pattern to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.

10th Row: K1, K2tog, work to end of row (51 sts).

Continue without further decrease at armhole.

Decrease 1 st at Front edge in next and every 3rd row until 44 sts, then every 4th row until 34 sts, and armhole corresponds with Back (ending armhole edge).

Shoulder Shaping

Row: Cast off 8 sts, work to end of row.

2nd Row: Work to end of row.

Repeat these 2 rows once.

5th Row: Cast off 9 sts, work to end of row.

6th Row: As 2nd now.

Cast off remaining 9 sts

Join wool to sts at centre and work remaining side to correspond.

To Make Up

Press with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Join shoulder and side seams.

Neck Ribbing

Using the 4 No. 12 needles and commencing at right-hand side of back of neck work the 43 sts in pattern across back of neck, knit up 77 sts down left side, knit up 1 st at centre front, then knit up 77 sts up right side.

1st Round: Work in K1, P1, ribbing.

2nd Round: (K1, P1) 59 times, slip 1, K1, pass slip stitch over, K1, (centre st), K2tog, (P1, K1) to end of round.

Work 6 rounds more, decreasing at each side of centre knit stitch in every row. Cast off in rib.

Armhole Bands

Using the 4 No. 12 needles, knit up 158 sts around armhole.

Work in K1, P1, ribbing for 8 rounds. Cast off in rib.
