Woodville Cardigan

Fitted vintage cardigan with vertical lace and cable stripes. Long or short sleeves

Materials

7 skeins (short sleeves), 9 skeins (long sleeves) “Sun-Glo” Shrinkproof 3-ply Fingering Wool, Shade No. 2333 (Lime);

2 prs. needles, UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

7 buttons.

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 20″;
bust, 32/34″;
length of sleeve seam, 4½”
Note: For 36″ bust, use UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 instead of No. 10 needles.

Pattern

A multiple of 16 sts, plus 2 extra sts

Tension

8 sts, 1″; 9 rows, 1″.

Abbreviations

K: Knit.
P: Purl.
St: Stitch.
Tog: Together.
Sl: Slip
Yo: Yarn over
Psso: Pass slip stitch over.
Tbl: Through back of loops.
DC: Double crochet. (US single crochet)
Bl: blue.
St st (Stocking Stitch): K1 row, P1 row alternately.
Garter St: Knit every row.
Moss st: With an uneven number of sts work as follows: K1,* P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.  Repeat this row throughout.

With an even number of sts work as follows:
1st Row: * K1, P1, repeat from * to end of row.
2nd Row: * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 1st and 2nd row alternately.

Pattern

Back

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 100 sts

Work in rib of K1, P1, for 3½” (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P5, * P twice into next st, P2, repeat from * to last 5 sts, P5 (130 sts).

1st Row: P3, * (K2, yo, k2tog) 3 times, P4, repeat from *, ending row with P3 instead of K4.

2nd Row: K3, * (P2, yo, P2tog) 3 times, K4, repeat from *, ending row with K3 instead of K4.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th Row: P3, * sl. the next 4 sts on to a spare needle and leave in front of work, (K2, yo, K2tog) twice, (K2, yo, K2tog) from spare needle, P4, repeat from * ending row with P3 instead of P4.

8th Row: Repeat 2nd row.

Repeat the last 8 rows and when work measures 12½” shape armholes by casting off 4 sts at the beginning of the next 8 rows (98 sts).

When armholes measure 7″ shape shoulders by casting off 11 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows. Cast off.

Left Front

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 60 sts

1st Row: (K1, P1) 26 times, K8.

2nd Row: K8, (K1, P1) 26 times.

Repeat the last 2 rows for 3½” (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles.

Next Row (wrong side): K8, P2, * P twice into next st, P2, repeat from * to last 5 sts, P5 (75 sts).

1st Row: P3, * (K2, yo, k2tog) 3 times, P4, repeat from * to last 8 sts, K8.

2nd Row: K8, * K4, (P2, yo, P2tog) 3 times, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K3.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th Row: P3, * cable 12 sts (note from Sarah: See row 7 of the back for instructions on working the cable), P4, repeat from * to last 8 sts, K8.

8th Row: Repeat 2nd row.

Repeat these 8 rows until work measures 12½”·

Next Row: Cast off 4 sts at armhole edge, work to last 10 sts; P2tog, K8.

Continue to decrease 1 st at centre front (inside border) every 4th row and cast off 4 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 more times.

Continue to decrease 1 st inside border, every 4th row until decreased to 41 sts

When armhole measures 7″ shape shoulder by casting off 11 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times.

Work remaining 8 sts in garter st for 2½”. Cast off.

Right Front

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 60 sts

1st Row: K8, (K1, P1), 26 times.

2nd Row: (K1, P1) 26 times, K8.

Repeat the last 2 rows.

5th Row: K4, cast off 3 sts, work to end of row.

6th Row: Work to last 4 sts, cast on 3 sts, K4.

Repeat the 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 3½”, making 6 more buttonholes 1¾” apart.

Next Row (wrong side): P5, * P2, P twice into next st, repeat from * to last 10 sts, P2, K8 (75 sts).

1st Row: K8, * P4, (k2, yo, k2tog) 3 times, repeat from * to last 3 sts, P3.

2nd Row: K3, * (P2, yo, P2 tog.) 3 times, K4, repeat from * to last 8 sts, K8.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th Row: K8, * P4, cable 12, repeat from * to last 3 sts, P3.

8th Row: Repeat 2nd row.

Repeat these 8 rows making buttonholes 1¾” apart and work shapings to correspond with left front.

Short Sleeves

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 80 sts

Work in rib of k1, P1, for 1″ (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P2, * P3, P twice into next st, repeat from * to last 6 sts, P6 (98 sts).

Work in pattern the same as for back, and when sleeve seam measures 4½” K2tog each end of every 2nd row until decreased to 64 sts, then every row until decreased to 32 sts. Cast off.

Long Sleeves

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 60 sts

Work in rib of K1, P1, for 3″ (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P1 row, increasing 6 sts (66 sts).

Work in pattern as for back, increasing 1 st each end of every 8th row until increased to 96 sts

When sleeve seam measures 19″ or required length, shape the top the same as for short sleeves.

Shoulder Pads

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 44 sts

Work in st st for 6″. Cast off.

Fold diagonally, lightly pad with cotton wool and sew up edges.

To Make Up

Press with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Sew up seams, sew in sleeves and shoulder pads.

Join borders at back of neck Sew buttons on left front.
