1940s short sleeve top with lace patterning

Materials

4 skeins “Sun-Glo” Shrinkproof 2-ply Fingering Wool, Shade No. 1075 (White);

2 prs. needles, UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 19″;  bust, 32/ 34″.

Note: For 36″ bust, use UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 instead of No. 10 needles.

Tension

7 sts, 1″; 9 rows, 1″.

Abbreviations

K: Knit.
P: Purl.
St: Stitch.
Tog: Together.
Sl: Slip
Yo: Yarn over
Psso: Pass slip stitch over.
Tbl: Through back of loops.
DC: Double crochet. (US single crochet)
Bl: blue.
St st (Stocking Stitch): K1 row, P1 row alternately.
Garter St: Knit every row.
Moss st: With an uneven number of sts work as follows: K1,* P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.  Repeat this row throughout.

With an even number of sts work as follows:
1st Row: * K1, P1, repeat from * to end of row.
2nd Row: * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 1st and 2nd row alternately.

Pattern

Back

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 102 sts Work in rib of K1, P1, for 3½” (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles.

Next Row: * K4, work twice into next st, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2 (122 sts).

2nd Row: P

Work in following pattern:

1st Row: K1, * (yo, k2tog) 3 times, K2, yo, k3tog, yo, K1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd and Alternate Rows: P

3rd Row: K1, * K1, (yo, K2tog) 3 times, K1, yo, k3tog, yo, K1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

5th Row: K1, * K2, (yo, K2tog) 3 times, K4, repeat from * to last st, K1.

7th Row: K1, * K3, (yo, K2tog) 3 times, K3, repeat from * to last st, K1.

9th Row: K1, * yo, k3tog, yo, K1, (yo, k2tog) 3 times, K2, repeat from * to last st, K1.

11th Row: K1, * yo, k3tog, yo, K2, (yo, k2tog) 3 times, K1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

13th Row: K1, * K6, (yo, K2tog) 3 times, repeat from * to last st, K1.

15th Row: K2, * K6, (yo, K2tog) 3 times. Repeat from * to last 12 sts, K6, (yo, K2tog) twice K2.

17th Row: K1, * yo, k2tog, K2, yo, k3tog, yo, K1, (yo, K2tog) 3 times, K2, yo, k3tog, yo, K1, (yo, K2tog) twice. Repeat
from * to last st, K1.

19th Row: K2, yo, K2tog, * K1, yo, k3tog, yo, K2, (yo, K2tog) 3 times, repeat from * to last 10 sts, K1, yo, k3tog, yo, K2, yo, K2tog, K2.

21st Row: K1, * (yo, k2tog) twice, K6, yo, K2tog, repeat from * to last st, K1.

23rd Row: K2, (yo, k2tog) twice, * K6, (yo, K2tog) 3 times, repeat from * to last 8 sts, K8.

24th Row: Repeat 2nd row

These 24 rows complete the pattern.

Work in pattern until work measures 12½”, ending with a p row. Cast on 9 sts

Next Row: (K1, P1) 4 times, K1, work 122 sts in pattern, cast on 9 sts

Next Row: (K1, P1) 4 times, K1, P122 sts, (K1, P1) 4 times, K1.

Keeping moss st border of 9 sts each end of row, continue in pattern until armhole measures 7″.

Work 2 rows in moss st across all sts then shape shoulder by casting off 11 sts at the beginning of the next 8 rows. Cast off.

Front

Work the same as for back

Shoulder Pads

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 48 sts and work in st st for 6″. Cast off.

Fold diagonally, lightly pad with cotton wool and sew up edges.

To Make Up

Press lightly with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Sew up side and shoulder seams.

Sew in shoulder pads.
