Note:
Jumper is worked on a set of 4 needles in one piece to underarm. Modern knitters may substitute circular needles wherever appropriate.
Materials
- 32 ozs. 3-ply fawn wool (light fingering weight);
- 1 oz. 3-ply brown;
- small quantity of 4-ply green wool (fingering weight);
- 1 set of 4 old UK No. 12 / US 2 / 2.75mm and
- 1 set of 4 old UK No. 10 / US 3 / 3.25mm needles;
- Circular needles to match in a length less than 24″
- 1 zip
Gauge
7½ stitches to 1 inch.
Size
To fit 24 inch chest;
length from top of shoulder, 14½ inches;
length of sleeve at underarm, 10 inches.
Abbreviations
F., fawn;
B., brown;
G., green.
inc in next stitch = knit into the front of the next stitch without dropping it off the needle, knit into the back of the same stitch and drop it off the needle. One stitch has now become two stitches.
Pattern
Body
Using fawn wool and smaller needles, cast on 180 sts
Work in rounds of K1, P1 for 2 inches.
Change to larger needles.
1st and 2nd rds. Knit fawn.
3rd rd: * K1 F, 1 B, 2 F, 1 B, repeat from * to end.
4th rd: K2 F, * 2 B, 3 F, repeat from * to last 3 sts, 2 B, 1 F.
Repeat 1st and 2nd rounds once.
Knit next 10 rounds from chart.
Then continue knitting fawn in rounds till work measures 9½ inches.
Shape Armholes (for Back)
1st row: Cast off 4 sts, K86, turn. (Leave the remaining 90 sts for back)
2nd row: Cast off 4 sts, P82.
3rd row: K2tog, knit to last 2 sts,K2tog
4th row: Purl.
Repeat 3rd and 4th rows twice (76 sts).
Continue without shaping till work measures 14½ inches from commencement.
Shape Shoulders
1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 12 sts, turn.
3rd row: Work to end.
4th and 5th rows: Cast off 24 sts., work to end.
Leave remaining 28 sts. on spare needle.
Join in wool to remaining 90sts, and work to correspond with back till 76 sts. remain.
Purl 1 row.
Next row: K38, turn.
Work without shaping on these 38 sts. till work measures 13 inches from commencement, ending with a purl row.
Shape Neck
1st row: K30, turn. (leave 8 remaining sts on a stitch holder).
2nd row: Purl.
Continue in stocking st. dec. once at neck edge in next and every alt. row till 24 sts. remain.
Work 2 rows.
Shape Shoulder
1st row: Purl to last 12 sts., turn.
2nd row: Knit to end.
3rd row: Purl to end. Cast off.
Join in wool at centre front, and work other side to correspond.
Collar
Sew up shoulder seams.
With right side facing, using smaller needles and brown wool, work across 8 sts. as follows:
(K2, inc. once in next st.) twice, K2,
knit up 20 sts along front edge,
(K1, inc. once in next st.) 14 times,
knit up 20 sts. along front,
(inc. once in next st., K2) twice, K2 (102 sts.).
1st row: K2, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end.
2nd row: Like 1st row.
3rd row: K1, (inc. once in next st.) twice, rib to last 3 sts., (inc. once in next st.) twice, K1.
4th row: Like 1st row.
Repeat 1st to 4th rows 4 times. Cast oft in rib.
Sleeves (worked from top)
Using fawn wool and larger needles cast on 13 sts.
1st row: Knit to end, cast on 2 sts.
2nd row: Purl to end, cast on 2 sts.
Repeat these 2 rows till there are 66 sts.
Work 10 rows without shaping.
Then dec. once each end of needle in next and every following 6th row till 44 sts. remain.
Work without shaping till work measures 8 inches from commencement.
Change to brown wool and smaller needles. Knit 1 row.
Then work in rib of K1, P1 for 2½ inches. Cast off in rib.
To Make Up
Press lightly. Sew in sleeves. Sew zip in position.
