Evergreen vintage cardigan with rib design

from Sun Glo Knitting Book Series 79

Materials

  • 10 skeins “SunGlo” shrinkproof crochet wool or 4-ply fingering wool, shade No. 2313 (Soldier Red).
    1 skein, shade No. 1016 (Black).
  • 2 pairs Needles, Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 3/Metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm
  • 8 Button Moulds.

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder 19½ inches.
Bust 32/ 34 inches.
Length of sleeve seam 19 inches.

NOTE: For 36 inch bust, use Old UK No. 9/US 5/metric 3.75mm instead of No. 10 needles.

Tension

8 sts 1 inch. 9 rows 1 inch.

Pattern

Back

Using smaller needles and red wool cast on 97 sts

1st Row: K1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end.

2nd Row: P1, * k1, p1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat the last 2 rows. for 3½ inches, (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to larger needles and work 3 rows rib.

4th Row: (K1, p1) into 1st st., (k1, p1) 16 times, (k1, p1) into next st., (p1, k1) 14 times, p1, (k1, p1) into next st., (p1, k1) 16 times. (p1, k1) into last st.

5th Row: (P1, k1) 18 times, (k1, p1) 15 times, k1, (k1, p1) 17 times.

6th Row: (K1, p1) 17 times, (p1, k1) 15 times, p1, (p1, k1) 18 times.

7th Row: Repeat 5th row.

8th Row: (P1, k1) into 1st st., (p1, k1) 17 times, (p1, k1) into next st., (p1, k1) 14 times, p1, (k1, p1) into next st., (k1, p1) 17 times, (k1, p1) into last st.

Work 3 rows rib.

12th Row: (K1, p1) into 1st st., (k1, p1) 17 times, (k1, p1) into next st., (p1, k1) 16 times, p1, (k.1, p1) into next st., (p1, k1) 17 times, (p1, k1) into last st.

13th Row: (P1, k1) 19 times, (k1, p1) 17 times, k1, (k1, p1) 18 times.

14th Row: (K1, p1) 18 times, (p1, k1) 17 times, p1, (p1, k1) 19 times.

15th Row: Repeat 13th row.

16th Row: (P1, k1) into 1st st., (p1, k1) 18 times, (p1, k1) into next st., (p1, k1) 16 times, p1, (k1, p1) into next st., (k1, p1) 18 times, (k1, p1) in to last st.

Continue in this way increasing 4 sts every 4th row until increased to 129 sts

When work measures 12½ inches shape armholes by casting off 8 sts at the beginning of the next row. K2tog each end of the next 4 rows, then every 2nd row 4 times.

When armholes measure 7 inches shape shoulders by casting off 8 sts at the beginning of the next 8 rows.

Cast off.

Left Front

Using smaller needles and red wool cast on 48 sts Work in rib of k1, p1 for 3½ inches (working 1st row into back of sts ).

Change. to larger needles and work 3 rows rib.

4th Row: (K1, p1) 12 times, (k1, p1) into next st., (p1, k1) 11 times, (p1, k1) into last st.

5th Row: (P1, k1) 12 times, k1, (p1, k1) 12 times, p1.

6th Row: K1, (p1, k1) 12 times, p1, (p1, k1) 12 times.

7th Row: Repeat 5th row.

8th Row: (K1, p1) 12 times, k1, (p1, k1) into next st., (p1, k1) 11 times, p1, (k1, p1) into last st.

Work 3 rows rib.

Continue in this way increasing 1 st. at side seam edge and 1 st. in the centre (2 inc. sts) on the next and then every 4th row following until increased to 64 sts

When work measures 12½ inches cast off 8 sts at armhole edge of the next row.

K2tog at armhole edge of the next 4 rows, then every 2nd row 4 times.

When armhole measures 4 inches cast off 4 sts at neck edge of the next row.

K2tog at neck edge of the next 6 rows, then every 2nd row until decreased to 32 sts

When armhole measures 7 inches shape shoulder by casting off 8 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 4 times.

Border

Using smaller needles and B. wool cast on 16 sts Work in rib of k1, p1 for 17½ inches.

Cast off.

Right Front

Work to correspond with left front working each row from the end to the beginning.

Border

Work the same as for border of left front making buttonholes as follows: 1st one being ½ inch from lower edge and 7 more 2 inches apart.

Buttonholes

1st Row: Rib 7 sts, cast off 3 sts, rib 6 sts

2nd Row: Rib 6 sts, cast on 3 sts, rib 7 sts

Sleeves

Using smaller needles and red wool cast on 62 sts Work in rib of k1, p1 for 3 inches (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to larger needles and continue in rib increasing 1 st. each end of every 6th row until increased to 100 sts

When sleeve seam measures 18 inches or required length k2tog each end of every 2nd row until decreased to 52 sts

When work measures 6 inches from 1st decrease, cast off 12 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows.

Work remaining 28 sts for 1½ inches.

Cast off. Stitch the cast off sts to side of sts worked for 1½ inches.

Neckband

Join shoulder seams.

With right side of work towards you and using red wool and smaller needles, pick up and k. about 88 sts around neck. Work in rib of k1, p1, for 1 inch.

Cast off in ribbing.

Covering for Buttons (8)

Using smaller needles and red wool cast on 3 sts

Work in st.st., increasing 1 st. each end of every row until increased to 13 sts

Work 3 rows, k2tog each end of every row until decreased to 3 sts Cast off.

Cover moulds or pad coverings with cotton wool.

Shoulder Pads

Using larger needles and red wool, cast on 24 sts

Work 24 rows st.st. Cast off.

Fold in half, pad with cotton wool and sew up edges.

To Make Up

Join borders on to fronts. Press all parts except the ribbing at lower edge that was worked on smaller needles with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Sew up seams, sew in sleeves and shoulder pads, sew buttons on left front.
