Vintge cardigan with long sleeves, v neck and textured stitch pattern

Materials

Patons Bonny Sports Wool.

Knitting Needles - 1 pair UK No. 5/5.5mm/US 9

A Crochet Hook

One Pair of Shoulder Pads.

Eight Buttons.

Measurements

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 2 patterns to 1½ inches in width. A pattern is 4 stitches wide.

Instructions are written for smaller size [A]. Instructions for larger size [B] are written in brackets, thus [B-...]

Pattern

The Left Front

Cast on 47 [B-51] stitches.

** 1st row: (Wrong side of work) K1, * P4, pass second st. over third and fourth sts, repeat from * to last 2 sts, P1, K1.

2nd row: K1, * P1, (K1 into loop made by passing st. over in previous row), K2, repeat from * to last 2 sts, P1, K1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th row: K1, wool front, * slip purlways, P1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, slip 1, K1.

8th row: K1, purl to last st., K1. **

Repeat from ** to ** once.

Continue in pattern, decreasing once at beginning of needle in 2nd and every following 8th row, until 43 [B-47] sts remain.

Work 7 rows in pattern without shaping.

Continue in pattern, increasing once at beginning of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 50 [B-54] sts on needle.

Work 15 rows without shaping.

Cast off 6 [B-9] sts at beginning of next row, then decrease once at beginning of needle in every alternate row twice (42 [B-43] sts).

Work 1 row without shaping.

Decrease once at beginning of needle in next and every alternate row three [B-three] times, whilst at same time
decreasing once at front edge in next and every following 3rd row twice [B-twice] (35 [B-36] sts)

Decrease once at front edge only in every following 3rd row, until 24 [B-2 5] sts remain.

Work 1 row without shaping.

Shape for shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work in pattern to last 8 [B-9] sts, turn.

2nd row: Work in pattern to last 2 sts, K2tog.

3rd row: Work in pattern to last 16 [B-18] sts, turn.

4th row: Work in pattern to end of row. Cast off.

The Right Front

Work to correspond with Left Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle.

The Back

Cast on 79 [B-87] stitches.

Work as given from ** to ** for Left Front twice.

Continue in pattern, decreasing once at each end of needle in 2nd and every following 8th row, until 71 [B-79] sts remain.

Work 7 rows without shaping.

Increase once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 85 [B-93] sts on needle.

Work 15 rows without shaping.

Cast off 6 [B-9] sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 61 [B-63] sts remain.

Continue without shaping until arm-holes measure same as Front arm-holes.

Shape for shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work in pattern to last 8 [B-9] sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work in pattern to last 16 [B-18] sts, turn.

5th and 6th rows: Work in pattern to last 24 [B-2)] sts, turn.

7th row: Work 111 pattern to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Cast on 35 [B-39] stitches.

Work as given from ** to ** for Left Front once.

Continue in pattern, increasing once at each end of needle in 2nd and every following 8th row, until there are 55
[B-59] sts on needle, then in every 6th row, until there are 63 [B-65] sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until work measures 17½ ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 35 [B-37] sts remain, then in every row until 17 [B-19] sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up Jacket

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam.

Commencing at wrong side of work, and using Crochet Hook, work 2 rows of dc (US single crochet) along front edges and across back of neck, making 8 button-holes in 2nd row of Right Front, first buttonhole at lower edge and 7 more 2 ins. apart.

With right side of work facing, work 1 row of dc round outer edges of Jacket and sleeves.

Sew shoulder pads in position.

Sew on buttons to correspond with button-holes.
