Tailored look woman's v-neck jacket with fitted waist, shaped front and long sleeves

Materials

Patons Bluebell Crepe.

Quantities:
Size A – 13 ozs.
Size B – 15 ozs.

Knitting Needles – 1 pair UK No. 9/3.75mm/US 5

A Medium Sized Crochet Hook.

One Pair of Shoulder Pads.

Five Buttons.

Measurements

Size [A] [B]
Length from top of shoulder – 24 ins. 24½ ins.
Width all round at under-arm – 33 ins. 35 ins.

Length of sleeve from under-arm – 17½ ins. 17½ ins.(or length desired)

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 6½ stitches to the inch in width.

Instructions are written for smaller size [A]. Instructions for larger size [B] are written in brackets, thus [B-…]

Pattern

The Left Front

Cast on 46 [B-54] stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: (K1, P1) into first st, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in plain, smooth fabric, increasing once at front edge in every row, until there are 56 [B-64] sts on needle.

Work 1 [B-1] row without shaping.

Decrease once at beginning of needle in next and every following 6th row, until 50 [B-58] sts remain, then in every 4th row, until 46 [B-54] sts remain.

Work 5 [B-5] rows without shaping.

Cast off 5 sts at beginning of next and every alternate row, until 21 [B-24] sts remain.

Work 5 [B-5] rows without shaping.

Increase once at beginning of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 26 [B-29] sts on needle, then in every following 8th row, until there are 31 [B-34] sts on needle.

Work 11 [B-11] rows without shaping. Cast off.

The Left Side Front

Cast on 5 [B-5] stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: Cast on 5 sts, purl to last st, K1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice [B-three times] then 1st row once.

[A] 8th row: Cast on 7 sts, purl to last st, K1.

[B] 10th row: Cast on 7 sts, purl to last st, K1.

Work 6 [B-6] rows without shaping.

Increase once at beginning of needle in next and every following 8th row eight times (9 increasings), whilst at same time decreasing once at end of needle in next and every following 6th row four times (5 decreasings), then in every following 8th row five times.

Work 3 [B-3] rows without shaping.

Cast off 6 [B-8] sts at beginning of next row.

Decrease once at arm-hole edge in every alternate row four [B-four] times.

In next row, cast on 29 [B-32] sts, purl to last st, K1.

[A] Decrease once at beginning of needle in next and following alternate row, whi1st at same time decreasing once at neck edge in 3rd and every following 4th row until 36 sts remain, then in every 3rd row until 26 sts remain.

[B] Decrease once at beginning of needle in next and following alternate row, whilst at same time decreasing once at neck edge in every 3rd row, until 29 sts remain.

Work 2 rows [B-1 row] without shaping.

Shape for shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 9 [B-10] sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row.

3rd row: Work to last 18 [B-20] sts, turn.

4th row: Like 2nd row. Cast off.

The Right Front

Work to correspond with Left Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle and making a button-hole in 65th and 66th [B-67th and 68th], and every following 21st and 22nd rows, until 5 button-holes have been worked from commencement.

To make a button-hole:

1st row: K2, cast off 3 sts, work to end of row.

2nd row: Work to last 2 sts, cast on 3 sts, P1, K1.

The Right Side Front

Work to correspond with Left Side Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle.

The Back

Cast on 102 [B-112] stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in stocking stitch, decreasing once at each end of needle in 11th (13th row from commencement) and every following 6th row, until 90 [B-100] sts remain, then in every following 4th row, until 82 [B-92] sts remain.

Work 19 [B-21] rows without shaping.

Increase once at each end of needle in next and every following 8th row, until there are 100 [B-110] sts on needle.

Work 3 [B-3] rows without shaping.

Cast off 6 [B-8] sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 76 [B-82] sts remain.

Continue without shaping until arm-holes measure same as Front arm-holes.

Shape for shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 9 [B-10] sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 18 [B-20] sts, turn.

5th and 6th rows: Work to last 27 [B-30] sts, turn.

7th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Cast on 46 [B-50] stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows nine times.

Continue in stocking stitch, increasing once at each end of needle in next and every following 8th row, until there are 70 [B-74] sts on needle, then in every 6th row, until there are 82 [B-86] sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until work measures 17½ ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 28 [B-32] sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up Coat

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using Crochet Hook, work 2 rows of dc (US single crochet) along cast-off edge, inside edge and top of fronts.

Sew side fronts to fronts under dc Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam.

Work 2 rows of dc round Coat and sleeves.

Sew shoulder pads in position Sew on buttons to correspond with button-holes.
