Shetland Isle Shawl

Traditional Shetland knitted lace baby shawl

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Lady Betty, 2-Ply

50 ins x 50 ins – 6 balls

Patons Beehive Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 4 and 7, metric 6mm and 4.5mm, or US 10 and 7

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 7 stitches to two inches in width measured over plain, smooth fabric on larger needles. (Note from Sarah: the original pattern states 7sts per inch but this would only give you a shawl 25 inches square and also doesn’t suit the size of the needles stated).

Pattern

Centre

Using larger Needles, cast on 180 stitches.

To Make Up

Using a flat seam beg at one corner, sew border around centre, gathering it at corner to keep work flat. Sew cast off edge of border to cast on edge. Roll shawl in a damp towel for several hours, then spread out flat, pinning each point out separately with rustless pins and leave until dry.
