Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width measured over stocking stitch on larger needles.

Pattern

Front

Using larger needles, cast on 40 stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K3, yo, K2tog, (K6, yo, K2tog), four times, K3.

4th row: Like 2nd row.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows once, turn, cast on 30 sts

7th row: K1, (inc once in next st), twenty-nine times, K40, turn, cast on 30 sts

8th row: K1, (inc purlways into next st) twenty-nine times, purl to last st, K1 (158 sts)

Rep 1st and 2nd rows forty-five times.

Using smaller needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K5, * K2tog, rep from * to last 5 sts, K5 (84 sts).

2nd row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 2nd row ten times, dec once at end of needle in last row.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep 1st row three times.

6th row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

7th row: Like 1st row.

8th row: K1, * K1, P1, rep from* to last 2 sts, K2.

Rep 1st row three times.

12th row: Like 2nd row.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows once. **

Rep from ** to 10th row once.

25th row: Cast off 4 sts, knit plain to end of row.

26th row: Cast off 4 sts, purl to last st, K1.

27th row: K2tog, knit plain to last 2 sts, K2tog

28th row: K1, purl to last st, K1. ***

Rep from ** to ** once, dec. once at each end of needle in first row.

Rep from ** to 10th row once. (71 sts) .

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K25, cast off 21 sts, K25.

Continue in patt on last 25 sts, dec once at neck edge in every row, six times.

Work 5 rows in patt without shaping.

13th row: K11, turn.

14th row: P10, K1. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front to ***, omitting buttonholes.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K2tog, knit plain to last 2 sts, K2tog

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: Knit plain.

4th row: Like 3rd row.

5th row: K39, turn. Leave remaining sts on stitch holder, and proceed as follows:

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K33, (P1, K1) three times.

3rd row: K2, (P1, K1) twice, * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

4th row: Like 2nd row.

5th row: K2, (P1, K1) twice, knit plain to end of row.

6th row: Like 2nd row.

7th row: K2, (P1, K1) twice, purl to last st, K1.

8th row: Like 2nd row.

9th row: K2, P1, yo, P2tog, K1, purl to end of row.

Continue in patt, making a buttonhole as before in every following 8th row twice.

Work 7 rows in patt without shaping.

33rd row: K2, P1, yo, P2tog, knit plain to last 9 sts, turn.

34th row: Knit plain to last 6 sts (P1, K1), three times. Cast off.

Join in wool at centre back, cast on 7 sts, and work to correspond with other side, omitting buttonholes.

The Long Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 48 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row fifteen times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows once.

Continue in stocking stitch, inc once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 64 sts on needle.

Continue in stocking stitch, until work measures 7½ ins from commencement.

Dec once at each end of needle in every row, until 28 sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Short Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 44 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row nine times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: * K1, inc once in next st, rep from * to end of row. (66 sts)

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: Knit plain.

Rep 2nd and 3rd rows, until work measures 2½ ins from commencement.

Dec once at each end of needle in next and every alt row, until 48 sts remain.

Dec once at each end of needle in every row, until 30 sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Collar

Using smaller needles, cast on 45 stitches.

** 1st row: K1, inc once in next st, * K1, P1, rep from * to last 3 sts, inc once in next st, K2.

2nd row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

3rd row: K1, inc once in next st, * P1, K1, rep from * to last 3 sts, inc purlways in next st, K2.

4th row: K1, P1, * P1, K1, rep from * to last 3 sts, P2, K1. **

Rep from ** to ** three times, then 1st and 2nd rows once.

Cast off in rib.

Work another Piece in same manner.

The Legbands

Using a flat seam, sew up side seams.

With right side of work facing, and using smaller needles, knit up 74 stitches evenly round right leg.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row three times.

5th row: K2, P1, yo, P2tog, * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep 1st row four times. Cast off in rib.

Work Left Legband in same manner, working buttonhole at opposite end of needle.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Sew collar pieces in position, cast-on edge to neck edge, commencing and ending 3 sts from centre back and meeting at centre front.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
