Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Baby Wool or Patons Baby Wool with Nylon

Size A. 18-19 inch – 2 balls

Size B. 20-21 inch – 3 balls

Length from top of shoulder: Size A, 11 ins.; Size B, 11½ ins.

Length of sleeve seam: Size A, 6 ins.; Size B, 7 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 11/3mm/US 2 and 13/2.25mm/US 1

Four Stitch Holders.

Three Small Buttons.

Tension

8½ stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch.

Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B, is shown thus [B-…].

Pattern

The Left Front

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 56 [B-62] stitches.

1st row: Knit.

Rep. 1st row three times.

5th row: As 1st row.

6th row: K2, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 5th and 6th rows until work measures 7½ ins. from commencement, ending with 6th row.

Keeping knit stitch edges correct, continue in stocking stitch, dec. once at beg. of needle in next and every alt. row until 51 [B-53] sts remain.

Work 1 row without shaping. Break off wool. Slip sts on to a stitch holder.

The First Sleeve

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 34 [B-38] stitches.

1st row: Knit.

Rep. 1st row nineteen times.

21st row: (inc. once in next st, K1) seventeen [B-nineteen] times. (51 [B-57] sts)

22nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

Continue in stocking stitch inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row until there are 63 [B-73] sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 6 [B-7] ins. from commencement, ending with a purl row.

Dec once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 53 [B-55] sts remain.

Work 1 row without shaping. Break wool, slip sts on to a stitch holder.

The Back

Using No. 11 Needles, on 112 [B-124] stitches.

1st row: Knit.

Rep row three times.

5th row: As 1st row.

6th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in stocking stitch until work measures 7½ ins. from commencement, ending with 6th row.

Dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 102 [B-106] sts remain.

Work 1 row.

Break off wool, slip sts on to a stitch holder.

The Second Sleeve

Work as given for First Sleeve.

The Right Front

Using No. 11 needles, cast on 56 [B-62] stitches.

1st row: Knit.

Rep. 1st row three times.

5th row: As 1st row.

6th row: K1, purl to last 2 sts, K2.

Rep. 5th and 6th rows until work measures 7½ ins. from commencement, ending with 6th row.

Dec. once at end of needle in next and every alt. row until 51 [B-53] sts remain.

Work 1 row without shaping.

Next row: K5, K2tog, [B-K3, K2tog) twice], * K1 (K2tog) three times, rep. from * to last 2 [B-4] sts, K2tog, [B-K1, K3tog]. (31 [B-31] sts).

Proceed for Yoke as follows:

Slip sts from stitch holders on to a No. 11 Needle in the following order:
first, Left Front, then First Sleeve, Back, and finally Second Sleeve.

Using needle holding 31 sts, with right side of work facing, work across remaining sts as follows:

Size A. only: Next row: (K2, K2tog) thirteen times, K1, (K2tog) fifty-one times, K1, (K2tog, K2) thirteen times, K2tog, * K1, (K2tog) three times, rep. from * to last 7 sts, K2tog, K5. (193 sts) .

[Size B. only: Next row: (K2tog, K2) thirteen times, (K2tog) twenty-three times, (K3tog) six times, (K2tog) twenty-four times, (K2, K2tog) thirteen times, K1, K3tog, * (K2tog) three times, K1, rep. from * to last 7 sts, (K2tog) twice, K3. (193 sts)].

Both Sizes:

Next row: K2, purl to last 2 sts, K2.

Proceed in lace panels as follows:

1st row: K2, K2tog, yo (for buttonhole), K1, * yo, K2tog, K12, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, K2tog, K4.

2nd row: K2, P3, * yo, P2tog, P12, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, P2tog, P2, K2.

3rd row: K5, * yo, K2tog, K4, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K5, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, K2tog, K4 .

4th row: K2, P3, * yo, P2tog, P10, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, P2tog, P2, K2.

5th row: K5, * yo, K2tog, K10, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, K2tog, K4.

6th row: As 4th row.

7th row: As 5th row.

8th row: As 4th row .

9th row: K5, * yo, K2tog, K3, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K4, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, K2tog, K4.

10th row: K2, P3, * yo, P2tog, P8, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, P2tog, P2, K2.

11th row: K2, K2tog, yo, K1, * yo, K2tog, K8, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, K2tog, K4.

Keeping lace panels correct, continue in this manner, dec. on following 4th row, then following 6th row (89 sts), noting that the 3rd buttonhole should be worked on last dec. row.

Next row: K2, P3, * yo, P2tog, P4, rep. from * to last 6 sts, yo, P2tog, P2, K2.

Next row: K5, * K2tog, K4, rep. from * to end of row. (75 sts)

Cast off purlways.

The Collar

(Both sizes) Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 86 stitches.

1st row: Knit.

Rep. 1st row once.

3rd row: As 1st row.

4th row: K2, purl to last 2 sts, K2.

Rep. 3rd and 4th rows seven times.

Working in K1, P1, rib cast off 6 sts at beg. of next 10 rows. Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side, sleeve and underarm seams.

Using a flat seam sew collar in position beg and ending 2 sts in from front edges.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
