Materials

Vest

Patons Beehive Baby Wool

15-inch under-arm – 1 ball

Length from top of shoulder – 11½ ins.

The Pilch Knickers

Length at centre front, 8½ ins – 1 ball

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 9/3.75mm/US 5 and UK 10/3.25mm/US 3 and 1 set of four UK No. 12/2.75mm/US 2 double pointed needles

Patons Crochet Hook UK No 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Four Press Studs.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 7½ stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain smooth fabric.

The Vest

Note: This pattern uses UK crochet terms. UK dc = US sc, UK tr = US dc and so on

The Front

Using UK 10/3.25mm/US 3 needles, cast on 60 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row eleven times.

Using UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 8 ins. from commencement, ending with 2nd row.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Cast off 2 sts, K3, P1, (K1, P1) eight times, K16, (P1, K1) nine times, K4.

2nd row: Cast off 2 sts, P3, (K1, P1) nine times, P15, (K1, P1) nine times, P1, K1.

3rd row: K1, K2tog, (P1, K1) nine times, K15, (P1, K1) eight times, P1, K2tog, K1.

4th row: (K1, P1) ten times, P15, (K1, P1) nine times, K1.

5th row: K1, (K1, P1) nine times, K16, (P1, K1) nine times, K1.

Rep 4th and 5th rows eight times, then 4th row once.

23rd row: K1, (K1, P1) nine times, K1, cast off 14 sts, (K1, P1) nine times, K2.

Work on last 20 sts as follows:

1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Rep 1st row five times.

Cast off in rib.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Sew up side seams.

Using Crochet Hook, work an edging round neck, along shoulders and round armholes, as follows:

1st row: Work 1 dc into every st, 2 ch, turn.

2nd row: * 3 tr into next st, miss 1 st, 1 dc into next st, miss 1 st, rep from * to end.

Sew press studs in position on shoulders.

The Pilch Knickers

Using UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 needles, cast on 136 stitches.

1st row: (K1, P1) twice, knit plain to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.

2nd row: (K1, P1) twice, P2tog, purl to last 6 sts, P2tog, (P1, K1) twice.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows, until 10 sts remain.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: (K1, P1) twice, K2, (P1, K1) twice.

2nd row: (K1, P1) twice, P2tog, (P1, K1) twice.

3rd row: (K1, P1) four times, K1.

4th row: K1, P1, K1, slip 1, P2tog, psso, K1, P1, K1.

5th row: (K1, P1) three times, K1.

6th row: K1, P1, slip 1, P2tog, psso, P1, K1.

7th row: (K1, P1) twice, K1.

8th row: K1, slip 1, P2tog, psso, K1. Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Turn cast-off edge over to front. Sew borders together, leaving 4½ ins. open at lower edges.

Using four UK No 12/2.75mm/US 2 needles, knit up 148 sts, evenly round top edge.

1st round: * K1, P1, rep from * to end of round.

Rep 1st round four times.

6th round: * K1, P1, yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of round.

Rep 1st round six times.

Cast off in rib.

Make a crocheted chain and thread through holes at waist, attaching a small tassel to each end.
