Neryl Baby Jumper (Sweater)

Free knitting pattern for a baby jumper/sweater with flying geese lace patterning
from Patons Knitting Book No. 357

Size and Materials

  • Patons Beehive Lady Betty – 3 ply or other fingering weight yarn
  • 20 inch underarm – 2 ozs.
  • Length from top of shoulder –
    10½ ins.
  • Length of sleeve from underarm – 6½ ins.
  • Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Old UK sizes 11 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3mm and 2.75mm
  • Four Small Buttons.

Gauge

To get these measurements it is absolutely
necessary to work at a tension to produce 9 stitches to the inch in width on larger needles.

Pattern

The Front

Using smaller needles, cast on 90 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row twenty-one times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K21, yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, knit plain to last 24 sts., yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, K21.

2nd and alt. rows: K1, purl to last st., K1.

3rd row: K19, K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to last 26 sts., K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K19.

5th row: K18, K2tog, yo, K5, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to last 27 sts., K2tog, yo, K5, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K18.

7th row: K17, K2tog, yo, K7, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, knit plain to last 28 sts., K2tog, yo, K7, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K17.

8th row: K1, purl to last st., K1. **

Repeat from ** to ** six times.

Keeping continuity of patt. cast off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in every row six times.

Proceed as follows:

*** 1st row: K4, * K5, yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, K7, rep. from * to last 2 sts., K2.

2nd and alt. rows: K1, purl to last st., K1.

3rd row: K4, * K3, K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K5, rep. from * to last 2 sts., K2.

5th row: K4, * K2, K2tog, yo, K5, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K4, rep. from * to last 2 sts., K2.

7th row: K4, * K1, K2tog, yo, K7, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K3, rep. from * to last 2 sts., K2.

8th row: K1, purl to last st., K1. ***

Rep. from *** to *** once.

Work 6 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

In next row: K25, cast off 16 sts., knit plain to end of row.

Continue in stocking stitch on these 25 sts., dec. once at neck edge in every row until 20 sts. remain.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K2tog, K2, yo, K2tog, K5, yo, K2tog, K7.

2nd row: K1, purl to last 2 sts., K2tog

3rd row: Knit plain.

4th row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

5th row: K1, * K2tog, yo, rep. from * to last st., K1.

Rep. 4th row once then 3rd and 4th rows once. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts. to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front until armhole shapings have been completed.

Work as given from *** to *** for Front, twice.

Work 16 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

In next row: K20, cast off 26 sts., K20.

Work 7 rows in stocking stitch on last 20 sts. Cast off.

Join in wool where sts. were left and work 7 rows in plain, smooth fabric. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 44 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row seventeen times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows once.

Continue in stocking stitch inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are

62 sts. on needle.

Work 5 rows without shaping.

Dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 46 sts. remain, then in every row until 24 sts., remain.
Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Front Neckband

With right side of work facing and using smaller needles, knit up 10 sts. along left side of neck, 16 sts. across front and 10 sts. along right side of neck.

** 1st row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

3rd row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

4th row: K1, * K2tog, yo, rep. from * to last st., K1.

Rep. 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows once. Cast off. * *

The Back Neck Band

With right side of work facing and using smaller needles, knit up 6 sts. along left side, 26 sts. across back, 6 sts. along right side.

Work as given from ** to ** for Front Neck Band once.

To Make Up Jumper

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Fold hem of front shoulders and neck bands in half and sew in position on wrong side.

Sew up shoulder seams for ½ inch.

Sew in sleeves placing seam to seam.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally press all seams.
