Long sleeved baby cardigan with vertical bands of upside down V lace patterns

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Baby Wool or Baby Wool with Nylon

Size A – 18 inch underarm – 2 balls

Size B – 20 inch underarm – 2 balls

Length from top of shoulder (Both Sizes) – 10 ins.

Length of sleeve seam – Size A – 6 ins. Size B – 7 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Nine Small Buttons.

Tension

8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch.

Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B is shown thus [B-…]

Pattern

The Left Front

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 42 [B-46] stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from* to last 2 sts, K2.

Rep. 1st row seventeen times.

Using No. 10 needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K14 [B-K16], P1, K2, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K7, K2tog, yo, K2, P1, K4 [B-K6], (P1, K1) three times, K1.

2nd and alt. rows: K1, (P1, K1) three times, P.4 [B-P6], K1, P15, K1, P13 [B-P15], K1.

3rd row: K14 [B-K16], P1, K3, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K5, K2tog, yo, K3, P1, K4 [B-K6], (P1, K1) three times, K1.

5th row: K14 [B-K16], P1, K1, inc. once in next st, slip 1, K1, psso, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K3, K2tog, yo, K2tog, inc. once in next st, K1, P1, K4 [B-K6], (P1, K1) three times, K1.

7th row: K14 [B-K16], P1, K1, inc, once in next st, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, yo, K2tog, K1, inc. once in next st, K1, P1, K4 [B-K6], (P1, K1) three times, K1.

9th row: K 14 [B-K16], P1, K1, inc. once in next st, K2, slip 1, K1, psso, yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, K2tog, K2, inc. once in next st, K1, P1, K4 [B-K6], (P1, K1) three times, K1.

10th row: As 2nd row. **

Rep. from ** to ** four times, then from ** to 2nd row incl. once.

Keeping continuity of patt., cast off 3 [B-5] sts at beg. of next row, then dec. once at armhole edge in every row until 34 [B-36] sts remain.

Work 19 [B-23] rows without shaping.

Cast off 12 sts at beg. of next row, then dec. once at neck edge in every row six times.

Work 1 row without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 8 [B-9] sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Right Front

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 42 [B-46] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row three times.

5th row: K2, P1, K1, yo, K2tog, P1, K1, work in rib to end of row.

Rep. 1st row thirteen times, making a buttonhole as before in 12th row.

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K2, (P1, K1) twice, P1, K4 [B-K6], P1, K2, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K7, K2tog, yo, K2, P1, K14 [B-K16].

Keeping continuity of patt. work to correspond with Left Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle and making a buttonhole as before in every following 12th row from previous buttonhole six times. (8 buttonholes.)

The Back

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 74 [B-82] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row seventeen times.

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twenty-five times.

Cast off 3 [B-5] sts, at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in every row until 56 [B-60] sts remain.

Continue without shaping until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 8 [B-9] sts, turn

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 16 [B-18] sts, turn

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 40 [B-44] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row twelve times.

14th row: Rib 4 [D-rib 2], * inc. once in next st, rib 3 [B-rib 4], rep. from * to last 4 [B-2] sts, inc. once in next st, rib 3 [B-K1]. (49 [B-53] sts).

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in stocking stitch, inc. once at each end of needle in 5th and every following 12th row until there are 57 [B-61] sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 6 [B-7] ins. from commencement.

Cast off 2 [B-2] sts at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in every row until 15 [B-17] sts remain.

Work 1 row without shaping. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neck-Band

Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder seams.

With right side of work facing, and using No. 12 Needles, knit up 79 sts evenly round neck.

Work 8 rows in rib, making a buttonhole as before in 4th row. Cast off loosely in rib.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
