Jumbo Jacket Toddler Cardigan

Jumbo jacket toddler cardigan with elephants on the pockets. Free knitting pattern.

Materials

  • 8 ozs. 4-ply fingering fawn;
  • small quantity of brown and green for pocket;
  • 1 pr. each Old UK Nos. 10, 11 and 12/US 3, 2½ (or just use size 2) and 2/metric 3.25, 3 and 2.75mm needles;
  • 5 buttons.

Measurements

Length from shoulder, 15 inches;

width around underarm, 26 inches;

length of sleeve from underarm, 13 inches.

Tension

7½ stitches to 1 inch.

Pattern

Left Front

Using Old UK 12/US 2/2.75mm needles cast on 50 sts.

1st row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to last 2 sts., K.2.

Repeat 1st row 3 times.

5th row: *K.1, P.1, repeat from * to last 4 sts., yo, P2tog, K.2 (buttonhole row).

Repeat 1st row 5 times, inc. once at end of last row (51 sts).

Change to Old UK 10/US 3/3.25mm needles.

1st row: K.4, * P2tog, before slipping off needle knit same 2 sts. tog. T.B.L. (this will be termed P.K tog. throughout), K.3, repeat from * to last 7 sts., (P.1, K.1) 3 times, K.1.

2nd row: (K.1, P.1) 3 times, K.1, purl to end.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 7 times.

17th row: K.4, * P.K tog., K.3, repeat from * to last 7 sts., P.1, K.1, P.1, yo, P2tog, K.2.

Continue in patt., making a buttonhole in same manner in every following 22nd row till 5 buttonholes have been
worked.

Work 7 rows in patt.

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 6 sts., work in patt. to last 9 sts., K2tog, (P.1, K.1) 3 times, K.1.

Continue dec. once inside the border in 4th row whilst at same time dec. at armhole edge in alt. rows twice (41 sts).

Continue dec. once inside the border at front edge in every following 4th row till 30 sts. remain.

Work 3 rows without shaping.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st row: Work in patt. to last 11 sts., turn.

2nd row: Work in patt. to end.

3rd row: Work in patt. to last 23 sts., turn.

4th and 5th rows: Work in patt. to end.

Cast off 23 sts., (P.1, K.1) 3 times, K.1.

Work 1½ inches in rib on remaining sts. Cast off.

Right Front

Using Old UK 12/US 2/2.75mm needles cast on 50 sts.

1st row: K.2, * P.1, K.1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st row 9 times, inc. once at beg. of needle in last row (51 sts).

Change to Old UK 10/US 3/3.25mm needles.

1st row: K.1, (K.1, P.1) 3 times, * K.3, P.K tog., repeat from * to last 4 sts., K.4.

2nd row: Purl to last 7 sts., (K.1, P.1) 3 times, K.1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 43 times, then 1st row once.

Commence armhole shaping, and work remainder to correspond with left front.

Back

Using Old UK 12/US 2/2.75mm needles cast on 92 sts.

1st row: K.2, * P.1, K.1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st row 9 times, inc. once at end of last row (93 sts).

Change to Old UK 10/US 3/3.25mm needles.

** 1st row: K.3, * P.K tog., K.3, repeat from * to end.

2nd row: Purl. **

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows till work measures same as front to underarm.

Cast off 6 sts. at beg. of each of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row till 75 sts. remain.

Continue without shaping till work measures same as front armhole.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st and 2nd rows: Work in patt. to last 11 sts., turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work in patt. to last 23 sts., turn.

5th row: Work in patt. to end. Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using Old UK 12/US 2/2.75mm needles cast on 52 sts.

1st row: K.2, * P.1, K.1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st row 19 times, inc. once at end of last row (53 sts).

Change to Old UK 10/US 3/3.25mm needles.

Work in patt. as given from ** to ** for back, inc. once at each end of needle in 7th and every following 8th row till there are 69 sts. on needle.

Continue without shaping till work measures 12 inches from commencement.

Dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row till 35 sts. remain, then every row till 15 sts. remain.

Cast off.

Pocket

Using Old UK 11/US US 2½ or 2/3mm needles and main colour cast on 30 sts.

Purl 1 row (wrong side of work).

Work 32 rows from chart, reading knit rows from right to left and purl rows left to right.

Next row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat this row 3 times. Cast off.

To Make Up

Press lightly. Sew up shoulder seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Sew up side and sleeve seams.

Join together bands from front and sew to back of neck.

Sew on buttons, and sew pockets in position.
