Ian Jumper/Sweater and Knickers (Shorts)

Free knitting pattern for a baby's jumper/sweater and knickers

from Patons Knitting Book No. 357

These patterns were originally knit with Patons Beehive Baby Wool or other fingering weight wool

The Jumper

19-20 inch underarm – 3 ozs.

Length from top of shoulder – 10½ ins.

Length of sleeve from underarm – 8 ins. (or length desired)

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Old UK sizes 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm

A Stitch Holder

Crochet Hook, Old UK 12/US C-2/metric 2.75mm

Four Small Buttons.

Gauge

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width on larger needles.

Pattern

The Front

Using smaller needles, cast on 80 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row twenty-five times, dec. once at end of needle
in last row.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twenty-five times. **

*** Work 9 rows in Garter Stitch, dec. once at each end of needle in 1st and every alt. row.

10th row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

11th row: * K2tog, rep. from * to last st., K1.

12th row: K2, * M1, K1, rep. from * to last st., K1.

13th row: K2tog, knit plain to last 2 sts., K2tog

14th row: K1, purl to last st., K1. ***

Rep. from *** to *** once.

Work 8 rows in Garter Stitch dec. once at each end of needle in 1st and every alt. row. (43 sts.).

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K2tog, K9, cast off 21 sts., K9, K2tog

2nd row: K1, P7, K2tog

3rd row: (K2tog) four times, K1.

4th row: K2, M1, K1, M1, K2tog

5th row: K2tog, K2, K2tog

6th row: K1, P1, K2tog

7th row: K2tog, K1, pass 1st st. over 2nd st. Fasten off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts., to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front to **.

Proceed as follows:

Work 9 rows in Garter Stitch, dec. once at each end of needle in 1st and every alt. row.

10th row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

11th row: (K2tog) seventeen times, K1, turn. Leave remaining sts. on stitch holder.

12th row: * K1, M1, rep. from * to last st., K1.

** 13th row: K2tog, knit plain to end of row.

14th row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

Work 9 rows in Garter Stitch, dec. once at beg. of needle in 1st and every alt. row.

24th row: K1, purl to last st., K1. **

25th row: * K2tog, rep. from * to last st., K1.

26th row: * K1, M1, rep. from * to last 2 sts., K2.

Rep. from ** to ** once.

39th row: Like 25th row.

40th row: Like 26th row.

41st row: K2tog, knit plain to end of row.

42nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1. Cast off.

Slip sts. from stitch holder on to one of your larger needles. Join in wool at centre back, cast on 4 sts.

1st row: * K2tog, rep. from* to end of row.

2nd row: K1, * knit up loop before next st., rep. from * to last st., K1.

Keeping extra sts. for underlap in pattern work to correspond with other side.

The Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 42 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from* to end of row.

Rep. 1st row nineteen times, dec. once at end of needle in last row.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows once.

Continue in stocking stitch, inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row until there are

59 sts. on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 8 ins. (or length desired) from commencement, ending with a purl row.

Proceed as follows:

** Work 9 rows in Garter Stitch, dec. once at each end of needle in 1st and every alt. row.

10th row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

11th row: * K2tog, rep. from * to last st., K1.

12th row: K2, * M1, K1, rep. from * to last st., K1.

13th row: K2tog, knit plain to last 2 sts., K2tog

14th row: K1, purl to last st., K1. **.

Rep. from ** to ** twice. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neckband

Using a flat seam, sew sleeves to front and back.

With right side of work facing and using smaller needles, knit up 106 stitches evenly round neck.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row six times. Cast off in rib.

To Make Up Jumper

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Using Crochet Hook, work 1 row of d.c. (US single crochet) along right side of back opening, making 4 buttonhole loops.

Sew underlap in position. Sew on buttons to correspond with loops. Finally, press all seams.

The Knickers (Shorts)

Size and Materials

Quantity – 2 ozs.

Length at centre front – 9½”

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Old UK sizes 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm

Two Stitch Holders.

Length of Narrow Elastic.

Gauge

To get this measurement it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width, on larger needles.

Pattern

The Front

** Using smaller needles, cast on 40 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row six times. **

Break off wool, leave sts. on a stitch holder.

Rep. from ** to ** once.

In next row: K2, * inc. once in next st., rib 4 sts., rep. from * to last 3 sts., inc. once in next st., P1, K1, cast on 20 sts., then work across sts. on stitch holder, as follows: K2, * inc. once in next st. rib 4 sts., rep. from * to last 3 sts., inc. once in next st., P1, K1. (116 sts.).

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, P73, turn.

3rd row: K32, turn.

4th row: P38, turn.

5th row: K44, turn.

6th row: P50, turn.

Continue in this manner, working 6 extra sts., in every row until all sts. have been worked on to one needle.

In next row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K49, slip 1, K1, psso, K14, K2tog, K49.

Work 2 rows without shaping; also after 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th and 19th row.

4th row: K1, P48, P2 tog, P12, P2 tog tbl, P48, K1.

7th row: K49, slip 1, K1, psso, K10, K2tog, K49.

10th row: K1, P48, P2 tog, P8, P2 tog tbl, P48, K1.

13th row: K49, slip 1, K1, psso, K6, K2tog, K49.

16th row: K1, P48, P2 tog, P4, P2 tog tbl, P48, K1.

19th row: K49, slip 1, K1, psso, K2, K2tog, K49.

22nd row: K1, P48, P2 tog, P2 tog tbl, P48, K1.

23rd row: Knit plain. ***

Work 51 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

**** Using smaller needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row five times, inc. once at end of needle in last row.

7th row: * K1, bring yarn to the front, slip 1 purlways, take yarn to the back, rep. from * to last st., K1 .

8th row: K1, * slip next st. on to a stitch holder and hold at front of work, P1, rep. from * to last 2 sts., slip next st. on to stitch holder and hold at front of work, K1.

Continue working on 53 sts., on needle as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1·

Leave these sts., on second stitch holder. Break off wool.

Join in wool and purl sts., from first stitch holder.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

3rd row: Like 1st row.

4th row. K1 from front stitch holder * P1 from back stitch holder, K1 from front stitch holder, rep. from * to end of row.

Cast off in rib. ****

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front to ***

Work 49 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K60, turn.

2nd row: P20, turn.

3rd row: K30, turn.

4th row: P40, turn.

5th row: K50, turn.

6th row: P60, turn.

7th row: K70, turn.

8th row: P80, turn.

9th row: Knit plain to end of row.

10th row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

Work as given from **** to **** for Front.

To Make Up Knickers (Shorts)

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side seams and cast on edges of front and back.

Thread elastic through hem at waist. Finally, press all seams.
