Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Baby Wool or other fingering weight wool

19 – 20 inch underarm.

Carrying Coat – 5 ozs.

Matinee Jacket -3 ozs.

Length from top of shoulder

Carrying Coat – 17 ins.

Matinee Jacket – 11 ins.

Length of sleeve from underarm

6½ ins. (or length desired)

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Old UK sizes 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm

Four Small Buttons.

Gauge

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width on larger needles.

Pattern

The Left Front

Using larger needles, cast on 85 stitches.

1st row: K1 * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row five times, dec. once at end of needle in last row.

7th row: Knit plain to last 6 sts. (P1, K1) three times.

8th and alt. rows: K1, (P1, K1) twice, purl to last st., K1.

9th row: * K2tog, yo, rep. from * to last 8 sts., K2tog, yo, (P1, K1) three times.

Rep. 8th row once, then 7th and 8th rows twice.

15th row: * K2tog, yo, K2, rep. from *to last 8 sts. K2tog, yo, (P1, K1) three times.

16th and alt. rows: Like 8th row.

17th row: * K3, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, , rep. from *to last 12 sts., K3, K2tog, yo, K1, (P1, K1) three times.

19th row: K2, * K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K1, rep. from * to last 10 sts., K2tog, yo, K2 (P1, K1) three times.

21st row: K1, K2tog, yo, * K5, yo, slip1, K2tog, psso, yo, rep. from * to last 9 sts. K3, (P1, K1) three times.

22nd row: Like 8th row.

Rep. 15th and 16th rows once,

7th and 8th rows twice,

9th row once,

8th row once,

then 7th row once inc. once at beg. of row.

Rep. 1st row five times. Proceed as follows:

**1st row: Knit plain to last 6 sts. (P1, K1) three times

2nd row: K1, (P1, K1) twice, purl to last st., K1. **

For Carrying Coat rep. 1st and 2nd rows forty-four times.

For Matinee Jacket, rep. 1st and 2nd rows fifteen times.

Using smaller needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: * (K2tog) ten times. K3 tog., rep. from * twice, (K2tog) twice, (K3 tog.) twice, (P1, K1) three times (43 sts.).

2nd row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 2nd row eight times.

Using larger needles, rep. from ** to ** twice.

Continue in stocking stitch and border, casting off 3 sts. at beg. of next row, then dec. once at beg. of needle in every alt. row until 36 sts. remain.

Work 24 rows without shaping.

Cast off 15 sts. at beg. of next row, then dec. once at neck edge in every row until 18 sts. remain.

Shape for shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 9 sts., turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Right Front

Using larger needles, cast on 85 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row five times, dec. once at beg. of needle in last row.

7th row: (K1, P1) three times, knit plain to end of row.

8th and alt. row: K1, purl to last 5 sts., K1, (P1, K1) twice.

9th row: (K1, P1) three times, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 8th row once, then 7th and 8th rows twice.

15th row: (K1, P1) three times * yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K2, rep. from * to last 2 sts., yo, K2tog

16th and alt. rows: Like 8th row.

17th row: (K1, P1) three times, K1 * yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K3, K2tog, yo, K1, rep. from * to last 5 sts., yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K3 .

19th row: (K1, P1) three times, K2 * yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K1, K2tog, yo, K3, rep. from * to last 4 sts., yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K2

21st row: (K1, P1) three times, K3 * yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, K5, rep. from * to last 3 sts, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K1.

22nd row: Like 8th row.

Rep. 15th and 16th rows once,

7th and 8th rows twice,

9th row once,

8th row once,

then 7th row once, inc. once at end of row.

Work to correspond with Left Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle and making a buttonhole in 4th row of Moss Stitch at waist, then in every following 14th row three times.

To make a buttonhole: K1, P1, K1, yo, K2tog, work to end of row.

The Back

Using larger needles, cast on 163 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from* to end of row.

Rep. 1st row five times.

** 7th row: Knit plain.

8th row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

9th row: K1, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 8th row once, 7th and 8th rows twice.

15th row: K1, * yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K2, rep. from * to last 2 sts., yo, K2tog

16th and alt. rows: Like 8th row.

17th row: K3, * K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K3, rep. from * to end of row.

19th row: K2, * K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K1, rep. from * to last st., K1.

21st row: K1, K2tog, yo, * K5, yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, rep. from * to last 8 sts., K5, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K1.

22nd row: Like 8th row.

Rep. 15th and 16th rows once,

7th and 8th rows twice,

9th row once,

8th row once,

then 7th row once. **

Rep. 1st row five times.

For Carrying Coat, work 90 rows in stocking stitch, without shaping.

For Matinee Jacket, work 32 rows in stocking stitch, without shaping.

Using smaller needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: (K2tog) forty times, K3 tog, (K2tog) forty times (81 sts.).

2nd row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 2nd row eight times.

Using larger needles, work 4 rows in stocking stitch.

Cast off 3 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 67 sts. remain.

Continue without shaping until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape for shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 9 sts., turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 18 sts., turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using larger needles, cast on 33 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row four times.

6th row: (K1, inc. once in next st.) seven times (inc. once in next st.) four times (K1, inc. once in next st.) seven times,
K1 (51 sts.).

Work as given from ** to ** for Back once.

Continue in stocking stitch, inc. once at each end of needle in 2nd and every following 6th row until there are 59 sts. on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 6½ ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Cast off 2 sts. at beg. of needle in every row until 35 sts. remain.

Cast off. Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Collar

Using smaller needles, cast on 79 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row twenty-one times. Cast off in Moss Stitch.

To Make Up Coat

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves placing seam to seam.

Sew collar in position, commencing and ending ½ an inch from each end.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
