Chirpy Chicks Toddler Cardigan

TOddler cardigan with birds on the pockets. Free knitting pattern.

Materials

  • 4 ozs. blue;
  • ¼ oz. yellow 3-ply fingering;
  • small quantity orange;
  • 1 pr. each Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25 and 2.75mm needles;
  • 6 buttons.

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 11 inches;

around underarm,
22 inches;

sleeve underarm, 10 inches.

Tension

7½ stitches to 1 inch.

Pattern

Right Front

Using smaller needles cast on 46 sts. 1st row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to end.

2nd row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to last 6 sts., (P.1, K.1) 3 times.

3rd row: K.1, P.1, K2tog, (yo) twice, rib to end.

4th row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to last 6 sts. (work yo twice as 1 st), moss st. 6.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 3 times.

Change to larger needles.

1st row: (K.1, P.1) 3 times, knit to end.

2nd row: Purl to last 6 sts., (P.1, K.1) 3 times.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows once.

5th row: K.1, P.1, K2tog, (yo) twice, knit to encl .

6th row: Like 2nd row.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 7 times.

21st row: Like 3rd row.

Repeat 4th to 21st rows twice (5 buttonholes) .

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 4 sts., purl to last 6 sts, moss st. 6.

Keeping a border of 6 sts. in moss st., dec. once at armhole edge in next and following alt. row (40 sts).

Work 15 rows without shaping, working a buttonhole in 14th row.

To Shape Neck:

1st row: Purl to last 8sts, (P.1, K.1) 4 times.

2nd row: P2tog, (K.1, P.1) 3 times. Knit to end.

3rd row: Purl to last 8sts., (K.1, P.1) 3 times, K2tog

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows 7 times, then 2nd row once.

Work 2 rows without shaping.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st row: Cast off 7 sts., purl to last 8 sts., (K.1, P.1) 3 times, K2tog

2nd row: Moss st. 6, knit to end.

3rd row: Cast off 7, purl to last 6 sts., moss st. 6.

4th row: Moss st. 6, knit to end. Cast off.

Left Front

Using smaller needles cast on 46 sts.

1st row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to last 6 sts., (P.1, K.1) 3 times.

2nd row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 4 times.

Change to larger needles.

1st row: Knit to last 6 sts., (P.1, K.1) 3 times.

2nd row: (K.1, P.1) 3 times, purl to end.

Work to correspond with right front, omitting buttonholes and working armhole shaping at opposite end of needle, till neck shaping is reached.

To Shape Neck:

1st row: Knit to last 7 sts., P.1, (P.1, K.1) 3 times.

2nd row: P2tog, (K.1, P.1) 3 times, purl to end.

3rd row: Knit to last 7 sts., P.1, (K.1, P.1) twice, K2tog

Work and finish off to correspond with right front.

Back

Using smaller needles cast on 80 sts.

Work 10 rows in rib of K.1, P.1.

Change to larger needles, and work in stocking st. till work measures same as front to armhole.

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once each end of needle in next and following alt. rows (68 sts).

Work without shaping till work measures same as front at armhole.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st row: Cast off 7, K.10, moss 34 sts., K.17.

2nd row: Cast off 7, P.10, moss 34 sts., P.10.

3rd row: Cast off 16, moss 28 sts., K.10.

4th row: Cast off 16, moss 22 sts. Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using smaller needles cast on 44 sts. Work 20 rows in rib of K.1, P.1.

Change to larger needles.

Work in stocking st., inc. once at each end of needle in 5th and every following 6th row till there are 64 sts.

Work without shaping till work measures 10 inches or length desired.

Cast off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Dec. once each end of needle in every row till 14 sts remain. Cast off.

Pockets

Using larger needles cast on 28 sts and work from chart in stocking st.

Work 6 rows rib for top of pocket and cast off.

To Make Up

Press lightly. Sew up shoulder seams, sew in sleeves.

Sew up side and sleeve seams.

Embroider eyes on pockets if desired.

Sew on buttons and pockets.
