Ba-Ba Toddler’s Sweater/Jumper

Toddler jumper/sweater with intarsia lamb - free knitting pattern

Materials

  • A – 3 ozs. dark 3-ply wool; 1 oz. light 3-ply wool;
  • B – 4 ozs., dark 3-ply wool; 1 oz. light 3-ply wool;
  • C – 5 ozs. dark 3-ply wool; 1 oz. light 3-ply wool;
  • small quantity of red, white and black wool;
  • 1 pr. each Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25 and 2.75mm needles;
  • 3 buttons.

Measurements

To fit A – 22 inch chest;

length from top of shoulder, 12½ inches;

length of sleeve at underarm, 7½ inches;

B – 24 inch chest;

length from top of shoulder, 11 inches;

length of sleeve at underarm, 9½ inches;

C – 26 inch chest;

length from top of shoulder, 15 inches;

length of sleeve at underarm, 12 inches.

Tension

7½ stitches per inch.

Pattern

Front

** Using smaller needles and dark wool cast on A 80 sts., B 88 sts., C 96 sts.

1st row: * K2, P2, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st row for A 15 rows, B 17 rows, C 19 rows.

Change to larger needles.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: Purl.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows A 23 times, B 28 times, C 33 times. **

Commence working from chart (below) thus:

1st row of chart: Using dark wool knit A 18 sts., B 22 sts., C 26 sts., using light wool A, B and C 44 sts., and using dark wool A 18 sts., B 22 sts., C 26 sts.

2nd row of chart: Purl A 18 sts. dark, B 22 sts. dark, C 26 sts. dark, A B and C 16 sts. light, 3 sts. dark, 11 sts. light, 4 sts. dark, 10 sts. light, A 18 sts. dark, B 22 sts. dark, C 26 sts. dark.

Complete front from chart.

Work 1 st. in black for nose; 3 in black and 1 white for eye. You may embroider the eye and nose if preferred.

Back

Work from ** to ** as given for front.

Then continue in dark wool and stocking st. till work measures same as front to underarm.

Shape Armhole:

Cast off A 5 sts., B and C 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row till A 62 sts., B 66 sts ., C 72 sts. remain.

Continue in stocking st. till work measures same as front at armhole edge.

Shape Shoulders:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last A 9 sts., B 10 sts., C 12 sts., turn.

3rd row: Work to end.

Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using smaller needles and dark wool cast on A 44 sts., B and C 48 sts.

1st row: * K2, P2, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st row for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles and work in stocking st., inc. once each end of needle in 5th and every following 6th row till there are A 62 sts., B 68 sts., C 72 sts. on needle.

Work without shaping till work measures A 7½ inches, B 9½ inches, C 12 inches or length desired.

Then cast off A and B 5 sts., C 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Then 2 sts. at beg. of every row till A, B and C 20 sts. remain.

Cast off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. Cast off remaining sts.

Neckband

Sew up right shoulder.

Using dark wool and larger needles pick up A 88 sts., B 92 sts., C 96 sts. evenly round neck.

Work in K2, P2 for 14 rows.

Cast off in rib.

To Make Up

Press lightly.

Sew up left shoulder for ½ inch.

Sew in sleeves.

Sew up side and sleeve seams.

Make loop on left shoulder.

Sew on buttons.

Make flowers as illustrated, 1 long stitch in green for stem, 2 short sts. or French knots on top for flowers in red.

Work collar of lamb in red.
